PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Bruce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sid Vernon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie comes into the arena with Kung Fu Fighting blaring out of the sound system. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bruce Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sid Vernon!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Donatello Bradman and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie on the wrong end of a kick to the body.

Vernon clinches.
Vernon with a knee to the head.
Gracie fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Gracie breaks from the clinch.
Gracie circles away from the clinch attempt.
Gracie shoots in but no luck this time.

Vernon rushes Gracie and presses him up against the cage.
Vernon missing with knees to the body.
Vernon lands an elbow that stopped Gracie in his tracks for a moment.


It looks like Bruce Gracie has been cut.
Gracie takes an elbow to the forehead.
Gracie tries to pull guard but Vernon won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bruce Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Vernon scores a nice knee to the body.
Vernon working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
Vernon is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Gracie tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Vernon smiles and moves away.
Vernon clobbers Gracie with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gracie avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Gracie closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Vernon to the mat! Vernon manages to get full guard.

Gracie avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Gracie won't allow Vernon to get back to his feet.
Gracie advances position into side control!
Gracie has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Vernon is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Gracie trying to control but Vernon is having none of it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Gracie swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Vernon is now in Gracie's guard. A big mistake from Gracie there, giving up the dominant position!
Gracie seems keen to control Vernon's posture.
Vernon is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Gracie looking for a guillotine here but Vernon defends easily.

Vernon decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Sid Vernon is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A slow jab from Vernon misses its intended target.

Vernon takes the fight into the clinch.

Vernon manages to break the clinch.

Gracie closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Vernon tries to escape but Gracie is in control.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Gracie looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Gracie tries to advance to mount but Vernon denies him.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Sid Vernon dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Bruce Gracie's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Vernon looks to land a combination. Gracie sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Sid Vernon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vernon misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Gracie slips a jab and a cross from Vernon.
Vernon rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gracie moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Gracie showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Vernon.

Gracie closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gracie lands in his opponent's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gracie wants to control from the top but Vernon keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gracie is really struggling to control Vernon but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Gracie sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Vernon's guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Gracie thows a huge punch but Vernon dodges it nicely.
Vernon is refusing to be controlled, as Gracie sits in half guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Gracie has gone for a leg lock! Vernon slips out almost immediately though and dives into Gracie's guard.

Gracie is trying to keep Vernon in close.
Vernon trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Vernon looking to sit in guard and control but Gracie gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Gracie tries to free his leg and advance position but Vernon is retaining full guard.
Gracie trying to control but Vernon is working from the bottom.
Vernon is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Gracie postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Gracie fails to land the takedown.
Vernon throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
The fight stays on the outside here - Vernon looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Vernon tries a head kick but it misses.
Gracie takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Vernon wants to clinch.

Vernon fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Gracie, pushing him back against the cage.
Vernon lands a nice knee to the body.
Vernon lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Vernon lands an elbow inside.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sid Vernon showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Bruce Gracie's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Vernon scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Vernon avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Gracie avoids the head kick by Vernon.
Gracie is looking to clinch.
Vernon closes the distance looking to clinch

and Gracie counters with a nice double leg into side control. Vernon won't be happy with that.
Gracie working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Gracie is looking to take a break and control but Vernon is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Vernon is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Gracie is controlling him well.

Vernon tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Gracie easily slips into full mount!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Vernon regains half guard.
Vernon is doing well to control the position and prevent Gracie from advancing to side control.
Gracie is looking to advance position but Vernon won't allow it.
Sid Vernon is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Vernon is looking for a sweep. Gracie is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Vernon moves into full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Gracie tries to free his leg and advance position but Vernon is retaining full guard.
Bruce Gracie has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Vernon has his foot on Gracie's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gracie works his way back into a safe position though.
Vernon takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Gracie trying to control the position from guard on top but Vernon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gracie tries to free his leg and advance position but Vernon is retaining full guard.
Gracie works over Vernon with some ground and pound from guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Gracie is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Vernon is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Vernon has escaped and now he's on top!

Gracie is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

And that's the end of the fight!
Bruce Gracie showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Vernon has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
