PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jeffrey Roth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Durbin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jeffrey Roth!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Durbin!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, John Kavanagh and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Durbin changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Roth tries to avoid it but Durbin manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Roth to the ground. Roth escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Durbin throws a head kick that misses.
Durbin looks for the body kick but Roth saw that one coming.
Roth shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Durbin sprawls well. Durbin wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Roth gets slowly back to his feet.
Roth closes this distance looking for a takedown but Durbin circles away.

Roth shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Durbin's guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Durbin holds on and takes a little breather.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Roth has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Durbin is proving hard to escape from.

Roth gets to his feet. Durbin looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Durbin shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Roth gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Roth jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Durbin walks away with a smile on his face. Roth gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jeffrey Roth. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Durbin gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Roth counters with a slapping leg kick.
Roth fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Durbin avoids it really well and circles away.

Durbin moves into the clinch.
Durbin has had enough of the clinch but Roth keeps him there for the moment.

Roth has a couple of punches blocked by Durbin.
Durbin tries to break the clinch but Roth is controlling the position.
Roth throws a punch but it's blocked by Durbin.
Roth wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Durbin has him pressed against the cage.

A head punch on the inside from Roth fails to land.
Durbin goes for a takedown attempt but Roth pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Roth wants to clinch up but Durbin keeps it at a distance.
Roth really is a fat lump.
Durbin shoots in and drives through. Roth sprawls well.
Durbin fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Roth closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Durbin is trying to break the clinch but Roth has him pressed against the cage.

Roth has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Durbin after a bit of a struggle.

Durbin tries to land knees in the clinch but Roth avoids the damage to the body.

A short body shot lands from Durbin as the two fighters clinch.

Roth jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Durbin walks away with a smile on his face. Roth gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Durbin takes the fight into the clinch.
Durbin lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Roth backwards.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jeffrey Roth will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Roth slaps away a takedown attempt from Durbin, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Durbin scores with a jab. Roth acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Durbin throws a series of punches but Roth avoids them all with ease.
James Durbin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Durbin will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Roth attempts a counter takedown but Durbin avoids it well and moves away.
Durbin takes a swing at Roth's ribcage but misses.
Durbin fails with the takedown.
Jeffrey Roth has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Durbin.

Roth tries to counter by clinching up but Durbin breaks away and moves out of range.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Roth misses with the head strike.
Durbin is trying to break the clinch but Roth has him pressed against the cage.
Durbin is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Roth gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Roth will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Durbin up against the cage.
Roth swings wildly with an uppercut but Durbin uses good head movement to avoid it.
Durbin is trying to stall.

Roth tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Durbin's elbow.

James Durbin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Roth jumps guard but Durbin stands there with Roth around his waist. Roth gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Roth drags the fight down to the ground.

Durbin slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Durbin wants to control from the top but Roth keeps moving.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Durbin trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Roth tries to clinch but Durbin is having none of it.
Durbin shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Roth as he avoids it easily.
Durbin lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Roth circles away quickly and effectively.
Durbin takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Roth tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Durbin manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Durbin tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Roth scores with a head kick. Durbin tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Durbin shoots in for a takedown but Roth shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Durbin tries to score with a low kick but Roth moves his leg out of the way.

Roth stuffs the takedown.

Roth lands a body shot.
James Durbin seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.
Roth stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jeffrey Roth.
I think Roth has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
