PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Glen Starner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Spezza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Starner might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Guano Apes - Open your eyes. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 30 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Glen Starner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Jason Spezza!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Taro Takaoka and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Spezza walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Spezza misses with a looping right.

Starner throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Spezza tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Starner is in Spezza's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Spezza keeping full guard, as Starner tries to pass.
Starner lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Spezza will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Starner lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Starner postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Starner has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Spezza not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Starner lands a couple of elbows.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Starner's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Spezza is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Starner defends well.

Starner working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Spezza's head.

Starner is in close to Spezza's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Starner in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Spezza has his foot on Starner's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Starner works his way back into a safe position though.

Spezza is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Starner doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Spezza.

Starner is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Spezza pulls his head out easily.
Spezza wants to lay and pray for a moment but Starner keeps working.
Spezza content to control rather than advance.

Spezza is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Starner is not content to let Spezza control the position.
Starner is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Spezza's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Spezza's back!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Starner doesn't have the hooks in and Spezza manages to turn into his guard.
Spezza advances to half guard.

Spezza is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Starner is looking to improve his position.
Spezza passes to full mount!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Spezza can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Starner is looking to escape.
Starner throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Glen Starner dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Spezza throws a leg kick but Starner sees it coming and moves out of range.
Starner lands a right hook to the body.
Spezza thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Starner if he has to take too many more of those.
Spezza looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Spezza tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Starner defends well and Spezza ends up having to push Starner into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Starner misses the jab.
Starner displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Spezza throws out the jab.
Starner drops down looking for a counter takedown but Spezza sprawls and moves away.

and Spezza counters with a lovely straight right hand!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Spezza throws a sloppy head kick and Starner moves out of range easily.

Starner bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Spezza regains half guard there - taking advantage of Starner's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Spezza avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Starner.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Starner connects with a nice short shot to Spezza's temple.
The fighters are battling for position here. Spezza manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Spezza bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Starner's guard.


Starner escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Spezza gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Spezza is pushing down on Starner's leg trying to pass to half guard. Starner is fighting to maintain full guard but Spezza has managed to sneak the leg through.
Starner is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Starner is staying active underneath Spezza, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Spezza might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Starner haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

That was a close second round but I would say that Glen Starner will probably get the nod.

Starner throws an elbow that misses. Spezza uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Starner's guard. Nice move by Spezza!

Despite the aggression on Spezza's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Glen Starner.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Starner, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
