PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jere Spence (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryiuki Machida (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jere Spence!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ryiuki Machida!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Machida shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Machida sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Spence defending well though.
Spence really is a fat lump.
Machida seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Spence does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Spence controlling the position for now.
Spence is looking for a sweep. Machida is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Spence is trying is best to control the position here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Spence has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
This is a sustained period of stalling by Spence.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Spence is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Spence is concentrating on defense, preventing Machida from advancing position.
Machida wants to get back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Machida lands with a kick to the ribs.
Machida tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Spence was well out of range. Poor timing from Machida.

Spence scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Machida is trying to escape the position but Spence is controlling the position.

Machida struggling a bit here.
Machida tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Spence wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Spence works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Machida wants to control but Spence postures up.

Spence controls the position.
Spence looks up at the clock and then as Machida takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Spence smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Spence content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Spence continues to hold on tight.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Spence's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Machida shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Spence has Machida pulled in close to control his posture.
Machida wants to control from the top but Spence keeps moving.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Machida fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Spence sprawls well initially but Machida persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Spence is looking to escape.
Spence keeping control of the position.
Spence gets back to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Spence is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Machida must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Spence might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Machida closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Spence to the mat! Spence manages to get full guard.
Spence looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Ryiuki Machida has got the better of the ground game so far.
Spence throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Spence is pulling down on Machida's head. It's preventing any offense from Machida, at least for the moment.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Spence is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Spence looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Machida with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Machida is looking for a sweep. Spence is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Machida is breathing heavily.
Spence with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Spence seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Machida for as long as he can get away with.
Machida is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Spence scores with a couple of nice shots.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Spence lands a nice short elbow.

Spence continues to stall.
Machida tries to get to full guard but Spence has control of the leg.

Ryiuki Machida showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Machida misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Spence throwing a counter right hand but Machida manages to avoid it.

Spence shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Machida is trying to defend but Spence finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Spence perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Machida is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Spence jumps into side control!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Spence tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Spence is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Machida can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Spence is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Machida can do to turn this around?

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Spence cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Spence fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Jere Spence has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ryiuki Machida is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
A nice elbow there by Spence.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jere Spence showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Machida has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
