PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Alex Epp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Arie Shakav (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Arie Shakav!
The judges for this bout are Sandra Marshall, Michael Johnstone and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Epp gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Shakav is trying to drag Epp to the mat but Epp just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Shakav is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Epp pulls Shakav into guard.
Shakav would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Epp throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Epp not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Epp kicks Shakav off and gets to his feet.
Epp shoots in but no luck this time.

Epp moves into the clinch.

Epp lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Epp prevents Shakav from breaking the clinch.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Epp creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Shakav is looking to break free of the clinch but Epp has double underhooks.

Shakav tries to pull guard but Epp holds him up against the cage and eventually Shakav drops back down to his feet.
Alex Epp has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Arie Shakav.

Epp turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Epp manages to end up in side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here as Epp stalls from top position.
Shakav is trying to control Epp's posture but Epp avoids it.
Shakav tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Epp presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Epp with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Shakav is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Epp pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Epp takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shakav keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Epp fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Epp wants to control the pace but Shakav is squirming around nicely.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Epp looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Shakav bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Shakav tries to free his leg and advance position but Epp is retaining full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Epp is on top in guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Epp dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Epp is looking to clinch but Shakav is avoiding it.
Shakav pivots, looking for a leg kick but Epp is out of range and Shakav settles back down.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Epp.
Shakav looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Epp is fending him off so far but Shakav persists. Nope, Epp circles away and we're back to standing.
Epp displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Shakav.

Epp closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Epp is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Epp has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Shakav really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Epp. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Epp connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Shakav is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

Epp quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Epp but it's paid off an Shakav is forced to tap! Nice work by Epp.
