PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Marco Robles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Simmons (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tony Simmons told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Marco Robles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tony Simmons !
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Robles keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Simmons scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.


It looks like Marco Robles has been cut.

Simmons rushes Robles and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Robles breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Nice takedown defense from Robles. No joy for Simmons on that attempt.
Simmons shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Robles sprawls well. Robles wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Simmons gets slowly back to his feet.
Marco Robles has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tony Simmons .
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Simmons pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
No luck for Simmons with that takedown attempt.

Simmons throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Robles's waist but Robles gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Simmons off to one side.
Simmons shoots for a takedown but Robles saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Robles tries to pull guard but Simmons won't allow it.

Robles is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Simmons defends well.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Robles tries for a takedown but Simmons sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Simmons misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

and Robles counters with a shoot takedown. Simmons fights it but they end up in guard.
Simmons is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Robles slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Robles could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Robles has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Simmons is proving hard to escape from.
Simmons wants to stand up but Robles is controlling him.
Simmons keeping moving, preventing Robles from controlling successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Simmons rushes Robles and presses him up against the cage.
Robles can't get the takedown.
Robles is trying to drag Simmons to the mat but Simmons just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Robles goes for a takedown attempt but Simmons pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Marco Robles. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Simmons fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Simmons shoots in for a takedown but Robles shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Robles seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Robles slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Robles stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Simmons swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Robles drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Robles jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Simmons is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Robles wants to control from the top but Simmons keeps moving.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Robles content to stall in guard here.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Simmons tries for a takedown but Robles sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Robles feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Robles jumps guard but Simmons stands there with Robles around his waist. Robles gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Robles lands an upkick as Simmons stands over him.

Simmons decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Robles, up you get!
Tony Simmons seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Simmons 's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Simmons duly obliges.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Simmons clinches up against the cage.
Robles fails to pull guard.
Robles has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Simmons is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Tony Simmons will probably get the nod - 10:9.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Robles wants to take the fight to the mat but Simmons manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Robles drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Simmons gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Robles works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Simmons wants to stand but Robles is controlling the position.
Simmons can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Robles controls the pace.
Robles seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Simmons for as long as he can get away with.

Simmons controls Robles momentarily but Robles frees himself.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Robles has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Robles has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Simmons is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Robles tries to score a body lock takedown but Simmons shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Simmons is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Robles is defending well for now.
Simmons working some nice short punches in the clinch.
Simmons is pressed up against the cage. Robles has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Simmons down to the mat. Simmons avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Simmons fails to land with a series of punches.
Simmons tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Simmons closes the distance and clinches.
Robles tries to pull guard but Simmons holds him up against the cage and eventually Robles drops back down to his feet.

Robles stays in close to Simmons 's body and controls the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Tony Simmons comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Simmons has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
