PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Andre Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeff Gotwalt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Andre Rodriguez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeff Gotwalt!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Frank Dennis and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gotwalt doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Rodriguez counters with a stiff right hand.
Nice body punch from Rodriguez.

Rodriguez gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Gotwalt got a little sloppy there for a moment and Rodriguez has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gotwalt has managed to get both his arms back between Rodriguez's legs - danger averted.

Gotwalt thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Rodriguez is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Gotwalt is aware though and is defending well.
Gotwalt slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Rodriguez has his foot on Gotwalt's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gotwalt works his way back into a safe position though.
Gotwalt seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Gotwalt drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gotwalt advances position into side control!
Gotwalt looks winded!
Gotwalt lands a few punches from side control.
Rodriguez wants to control but Gotwalt postures up.
Gotwalt just content to control the position.
Rodriguez is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Gotwalt is looking to take a break and control but Rodriguez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Gotwalt prevents Rodriguez from escaping the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Rodriguez sneaks out the side door and pushes Gotwalt away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Gotwalt takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Gotwalt shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Rodriguez napping and manages to drive through into side control!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jeff Gotwalt dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Gotwalt tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Rodriguez counters with a left and a right that stings Gotwalt.
Donk. Rodriguez catches Gotwalt right on the button with a cross.
A left and a right from Rodriguez both land. Nice combination.

Gotwalt darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Gotwalt is keen to just control but Rodriguez is a slippery customer.
Gotwalt scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Gotwalt wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rodriguez keeps working.
Gotwalt slows the pace down in half guard.

Gotwalt is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Rodriguez is just riding it out for now. Gotwalt eventually gives up the hold.

Gotwalt is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Rodriguez has managed to free his arm - good work.
Rodriguez wants to control but Gotwalt is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Rodriguez wants to get back to his feet.

Gotwalt has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Gotwalt feints and as Rodriguez raises his hands in defense, Gotwalt changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Gotwalt sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Rodriguez's guard.
Gotwalt winds up and cracks Rodriguez with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Let's hope that Gotwalt has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
