With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ricky Minard!
The judges for this bout are Winston Alpacca, Michael Johnstone and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Minard shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Johnson sprawls well. Johnson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Minard gets slowly back to his feet.
Minard looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Johnson is fending him off so far but Minard persists. Nope, Johnson circles away and we're back to standing.
Minard fails with the takedown.
John Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ricky Minard.
Minard shoots in for a double leg but Johnson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Minard tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Johnson manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Johnson has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Johnson on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Johnson tries to get out of the position.
Johnson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Minard is one step ahead there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Minard postures up in Johnson's guard and throws a big left but Johnson blocks it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Minard looks to clinch
and Johnson counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Minard displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Johnson.
Minard tries to counter with a clinch but Johnson shakes him off and moves away.
Minard lands a nice leg kick that just misses Johnson's sensitive parts.
Minard tries to clinch up but Johnson circles away and keeps his distance.
Minard doesn't manage to clinch there - Johnson circles away.
Minard fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Johnson fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Minard, pushing him back against the cage.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Minard.

Johnson works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Johnson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Johnson content to stall in guard here.

Minard throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Johnson escapes and throws Minard's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Minard is trying to escape the position but Johnson is controlling the position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Johnson has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown but Minard shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
And Minard tries to counter it with a takedown but Johnson pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Minard tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Johnson manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Johnson throws a right and a left that both miss.
The fight stays on the outside here - Minard looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Horrible takedown attempt by Johnson or perhaps it was just good defense by Minard, which made it look bad.
Johnson has a takedown stuffed.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Minard doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Johnson counters by clinching up.
Minard tries to pull guard but Johnson won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Johnson dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Minard darts in looking for a takedown but Johnson gets double underhooks and turns Minard into the cage.
We've been informed that Minard has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Johnson.
Johnson tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Minard defends well and Johnson ends up having to push Minard into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Ricky Minard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Minard lands a head kick!


It looks like John Johnson has been cut.

Minard takes the fight into the clinch.

Johnson pulls guard successfully.
Minard content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Minard throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Johnson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Johnson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Minard working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Minard lands a couple of elbows.
Johnson wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Johnson throws his legs up looking for a submission but Minard uses it to pass to side control.
Minard misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Johnson is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Minard sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Johnson is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Minard grinds an elbow into Johnson's temple.
The ground and pound from Minard seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Minard working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Ricky Minard has got the better of the ground game so far.
Johnson has one of Minard's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.

Johnson really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Minard is working Johnson over with some ground and pound from side control.
Johnson is trying to control Minard's posture but Minard avoids it.
Johnson is trying to get back to his feet.

Minard is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Johnson is trying to escape and Minard transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Johnson is forced to tap! Nice work there by Minard! Very nice indeed!
