PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ian McCall (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Khadzhimurat Gatsalov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ian McCall!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Khadzhimurat Gatsalov!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Phil Schofield and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McCall tests Gatsalov's chin there with a solid looking shot.
McCall on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Gatsalov throws a left and a right that both miss
and McCall counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
McCall seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Gatsalov cracks a nice hook into McCall's ribs.
McCall is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Gatsalov has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
McCall connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Gatsalov momentarily.
McCall swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Gatsalov misses the shot to the body.
Gatsalov fails with a takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gatsalov wants to clinch up but McCall keeps it at a distance.
McCall lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Gatsalov circles away quickly and effectively.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Gatsalov.
McCall went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Gatsalov is looking to clinch.

Gatsalov misses with a body shot.
Gatsalov cracks McCall with a right hand to the side of the head.
Gatsalov is on the wrong end of a nice combination from McCall.

McCall closes the distance and clinches.

Gatsalov works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Gatsalov is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Gatsalov postures up and lands a big shot to McCall's brow.

Gatsalov trying to control but McCall is working from the bottom.
Gatsalov pushing down on McCall's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gatsalov has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
McCall tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Gatsalov manages to move to mount!
McCall taking shots to the head.

Gatsalov has control of McCall's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and McCall regains control of the situation pretty easily.
McCall is in a horrible position here. Gatsalov smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gatsalov landing punches.
McCall in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
McCall trying desperately to get to his feet.
McCall knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gatsalov on the ground.

Gatsalov working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. McCall looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Gatsalov! Submission of the night perhaps?

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Khadzhimurat Gatsalov!
