Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Toney Vasquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tony Schmidt!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Wagner Zegers and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Vasquez is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Schmidt's half guard.
Vasquez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Schmidt keeps working.

Vasquez is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Schmidt has managed to free his arm - good work.
Vasquez wants to take a breather but Schmidt is having none of it.
Schmidt pushes Vasquez off looking to stand but Vasquez dives back in and keeps control.
Schmidt is trying to get back to full guard.

Vasquez is trying to work for a kimura but Schmidt is defending well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Schmidt wants to control but Vasquez is keeping busy.

Vasquez seems to be looking for submissions.
Schmidt is looking to improve his position.
Schmidt keeps trying to improve his position.

Vasquez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Schmidt is just riding it out for now. Vasquez eventually gives up the hold.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Schmidt keeping moving, preventing Vasquez from controlling successfully.
Schmidt is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Vasquez wanted to stand there but Schmidt had control of the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Schmidt closes the distance and clinches.
Vasquez is looking to take this one to the mat.

Vasquez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Schmidt shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Vasquez is trying to defend but Schmidt finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Vasquez is not content to let Schmidt control the position.
Vasquez flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Vasquez pushes Schmidt off looking to stand but Schmidt dives back in and keeps control.
Schmidt tries to pass the half guard into mount. Vasquez knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Vasquez is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Schmidt pulls his head out easily.
Schmidt prevents Vasquez from improving his position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Schmidt takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Schmidt closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Schmidt stops a takedown attempt from Vasquez.
Schmidt is struggling to control the position.
Vasquez wants a takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Toney Vasquez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Schmidt manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Vasquez trying to stand up but can't free himself from Schmidt's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vasquez postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Schmidt is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Vasquez, into his guard.

Nice sprawl there from Schmidt as Vasquez shoots in.
Schmidt has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Vasquez has Schmidt up against the cage in a clinch.

Vasquez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Tony Schmidt seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Schmidt darts in and clinches Vasquez up against the cage.
Vasquez avoids a wild elbow strike from Schmidt.
Schmidt is trying to force a seperation but Vasquez has the dominant position.
Vasquez tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Schmidt just stands there and leans against the cage.
Vasquez could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Vasquez wants to take the fight to the mat but Schmidt manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Schmidt has his foot on Vasquez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vasquez works his way back into a safe position though.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Schmidt is on top in guard.


Schmidt drops back, looking for a kneebar! Vasquez looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Vasquez looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Vasquez!

Vasquez in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Schmidt isn't going anywhere.

Schmidt trying to control but Vasquez flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!
Vasquez throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage.
Vasquez keeps control of the position as Schmidt tries to break free.
Vasquez is trying to stick to Schmidt's back but Schmidt is turning into Vasquez. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Vasquez's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Schmidt.
Vasquez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Schmidt is one step ahead there.
Vasquez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Schmidt's guard.

Vasquez wanted to stand there but Schmidt had control of the position.

Schmidt pulls Vasquez in close to prevent any damage.
Schmidt keeping moving, preventing Vasquez from controlling successfully.
Vasquez postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Vasquez drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Schmidt dives on top into guard.

Vasquez wants to stand and escape but Schmidt is having none of it.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Vasquez throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

Vasquez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Schmidt tries to free his leg and advance position but Vasquez is retaining full guard.
Schmidt throws a big right hand that misses.

Schmidt stands up and waves to Vasquez to follow him.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Vasquez looks for a takedown but Schmidt sprawls well.
Schmidt steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Vasquez.
Vasquez wants to clinch up but Schmidt keeps it at a distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Toney Vasquez will probably get the nod.
That's time! Vasquez's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Schmidt bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Vasquez tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Schmidt wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Schmidt stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Schmidt scores with a decent looking hook.
A lazy body kick from Schmidt

and Vasquez counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Schmidt!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Vasquez working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Schmidt controls the position for a moment.

Vasquez swings around for an armbar but Schmidt sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Vasquez's guard.

Vasquez looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Schmidt puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

Schmidt closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Vasquez to the mat! Vasquez manages to get full guard.

Vasquez shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Schmidt counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Vasquez closes the distance and pushes Schmidt back into the cage.
Vasquez goes for a takedown attempt but Schmidt pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

And that's the end of the fight!
Tony Schmidt comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Schmidt has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
