PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Bung Popper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Popper comes to the cage accompanied by Runnin with the Devil. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bung Popper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Anthony Pettis!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Alan Glass and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pettis throws a looping overhand right but Popper ducks down to avoid it.
Pettis shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Popper sprawls well. Popper wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Pettis gets slowly back to his feet.
Pettis steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Popper.
Pettis tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Popper feints a jab promting Pettis to slip. Popper then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Pettis slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Popper throws a left and a right that both miss

so Pettis counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Popper pushes Pettis off and gets back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

and Popper counters with a single leg into guard. Pettis didn't expect that.
Pettis told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

Popper's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Popper won't allow Pettis to sweep him here.

Popper working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Pettis's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pettis is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Popper is aware though and is defending well.
Popper connects with a couple of short punches.
Pettis wants to sweep but no luck.
Pettis looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Popper puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.
Popper perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Pettis slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Pettis is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Popper is aware though and is defending well.

Pettis has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Popper is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Pettis.
We've been hearing good reports from Popper's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The fighters are battling for position here. Popper manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Pettis drops back, looking for a kneebar! Popper looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Popper looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Popper!

Pettis is looking for a sweep.

You can see the frustration on Pettis's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Popper is working Pettis over with some ground and pound from side control.

Popper decides to stand up, so the ref orders Pettis to his feet.
Bung Popper seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pettis uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Popper has time to react.
Popper lands a body shot.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Popper on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Popper misses with a hook. Pettis ducked under it nicely.
The fighters circling - Popper throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Popper misses with a few strikes there.

Popper throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Pettis.
Popper connects with a jab.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bung Popper dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Popper is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Pettis can do to turn this around?
Pettis wants to slow Popper down by chopping away at his legs.
Popper stuns Pettis with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

Popper lands a left and a right that send Pettis crashing to the mat, dazed. Popper thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

Popper punishes Pettis's body with a nice straight punch.
Pettis is still on wobbly legs! Can Popper finish him?
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pettis drops his hands momentarily. Popper doesn't need a second invitation, landing a shot to the temple. Pettis staggers and falls to the mat and the ref dives in to save him from any more punishment. Pettis doesn't seem happy with the stoppage but he was done.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:25 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Bung Popper!
After the fight, Bung Popper was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
