PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Bernard Kirby (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Gray (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gray is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Real American. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bernard Kirby!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Gray!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gray has taken the fight to the clinch.
Kirby is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Gray is defending well.

Gray gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Kirby tries to roll over but Gray keeps him under control.
Gray throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Gray seems to be working for a kimura but Kirby defends the submission attempt.

Gray is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Kirby doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Gray.
Gray throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kirby regains full guard. Nicely done.
Gray in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kirby is on top in guard.

Kirby keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Gray's head.

Gray is trying to keep Kirby in close.
Kirby is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Kirby postures up in Gray's guard and throws a big left but Gray blocks it.
Kirby controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Kirby distracts Gray with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Kirby missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Kirby trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Gray utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Kirby postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Kirby throwing strikes from guard but Gray blocks nicely.

Kirby drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Gray manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Kirby has Gray in his guard.

Gray drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Gray jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Kirby has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Gray passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Kirby is looking to reverse the position.
Kirby is trying to control Gray's posture but Gray avoids it.

Gray avoids the strikes from the bottom by Kirby.
Kirby is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Kirby is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Gray's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Kirby misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Kirby has hold of Gray's hands but Gray slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Kirby wants to get back to full guard.
Gray is keen to just control but Kirby is a slippery customer.

Gray wants to advance to full mount but Kirby doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Gray lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Gray must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Kirby avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Gray stands up out of Kirby's guard for a moment - Kirby manages to land a nice upkick.
Kirby throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Kirby is pulling down on Gray's head. It's preventing any offense from Gray, at least for the moment.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Kirby looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Gray trying to control but Kirby is working from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Gray closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Kirby to the mat! Kirby manages to get full guard.

Kirby manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gray is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Kirby is defending well for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but John Gray will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Kirby is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gray sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kirby accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Gray dives in and scores a takedown into Kirby's guard.
Kirby is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Kirby thows a huge punch but Gray dodges it nicely.
Bernard Kirby overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Kirby takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Gray is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Kirby can't fight it off and eventually Gray manages to take the fight to the floor. Kirby looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Gray takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Kirby changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Gray fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Kirby gets caught flat footed, as Gray shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Gray postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Kirby is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Gray, into his guard.
Gray not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Kirby's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Kirby thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

John Gray comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gray has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
