PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roberto Piras (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Raimo Rento (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rento has chosen U.D.O. - Heart of Gold as his entrance music. Raimo Rento told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Roberto Piras!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Raimo Rento!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Frank Dennis and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Piras scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Rento with a lazy takedown attempt
and Piras counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Piras listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.

Rento gets the takedown into side control.
Piras is looking to reverse the position.
Piras is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Rento off and has taken his back!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rento trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
Piras controlling well, preventing Rento from escaping the position.
Piras trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Rento just trying to survive but Piras is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.

Piras has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Rento wants to get back to his feet.

Rento covering up well and avoiding damage.

Piras is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Rento is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Rento is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Piras off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted.

Rento is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Piras is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Rento can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Piras postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Rento looks a forlorn figure.
Rento keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Rento tries to lock up and control but Piras gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Rento wants to hold on but Piras pushes him away.

Piras prevents Rento from getting the reversal.

Rento pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Rento takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Piras swings widly with a right hand
and Rento counters with a nice uppercut.
Rento moves in looking to clinch but Piras pushes him off.
Rento tries for a takedown but Piras circles away easily
and Piras counters with a lovely straight right hand!
We've been told by Piras's head coaches at Woodhouse's that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Piras throws a body punch but Rento moves out of range.
Rento scores with a one two! Piras had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.


It looks like Roberto Piras has been cut.
Rento avoids the body shot from Piras.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Piras looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Rento misses with a takedown attempt - Piras sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Piras swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

Rento fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Piras, pushing him back against the cage.

An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Piras.
Rento changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Piras fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Rento has closed the distance and engaged Piras in a clinch.
Piras swings wildly with an uppercut but Rento uses good head movement to avoid it.
Rento throws an elbow but it's blocked.

Rento pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.

Piras lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Rento tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Rento shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Piras pinned against the cage. Piras gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Rento's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Piras blocks a head kick by Rento.
Rento uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Piras.

Rento drives through and clinches with Piras against the cage.
Piras stalls.
A frustrated look appears on Rento's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Rento stalling in the clinch but Piras improves position.
Rento is trying to stall.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Piras here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Piras is working for takedown but Rento is calmly controlling the position for now.
Piras scores with a hook to the body.
Piras lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Rento backwards.
Rento changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Piras fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Rento takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Piras jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Rento tries to clinch there but Piras circles away.

and Piras counters with a stiff right hand.

Piras moves out of range of the strikes.

Rento drives through and clinches with Piras against the cage.
Piras misses with the head strike.
Piras lands a nice shot to the body.
Piras scores with a nice hook to the head.
Rento takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Piras misses with a punch to the body.
Rento blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Rento tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Piras smiles and moves away.

Rento takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Raimo Rento seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Piras avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Piras stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Piras wants it to stay on the feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Piras tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Rento was well out of range. Poor timing from Piras.

Rento doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Piras has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Rento is working away from the top position though.
Raimo Rento has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Roberto Piras is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Rento thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Piras's head.
Rento thows a huge punch but Piras dodges it nicely.
Rento takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Rento seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Piras does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Piras is concentrating on defense, preventing Rento from advancing position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rento takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Well Piras has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
