PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Loyd Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Sednev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alex Sednev told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Loyd Pope!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alex Sednev!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Aleksandr Martynov and Dmitry Maklakov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pope tries to clinch but Sednev is having none of it.
Sednev connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Sednev shoots for a double leg takedown but Pope sprawls well. He's pushed Sednev's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Pope shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sednev as he jumps to the side.
Sednev with the counter takedown but Pope avoids it easily.
Sednev swings for the body but Pope moves out of range.

Sednev fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Pope, pushing him back against the cage.
Sednev is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Pope struggles to land a body shot inside as Sednev controls his hands.

Sednev manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sednev has Pope pulled in close to control his posture.
Pope lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Pope wanted to stand there but Sednev had control of the position.

Sednev has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pope can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pope working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Sednev's head.
Pope postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Pope trying to stand up but can't free himself from Sednev's guard.
Pope trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Sednev is trying to keep Pope in close.
Pope has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Pope has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Sednev is proving hard to escape from.

Sednev is looking for a triangle but Pope pushes his legs off easily.
Pope postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Sednev gets caught napping as Pope dives in and scores a takedown. Sednev manages to retain guard.
Sednev looks winded!
Pope is looking to stand up but Sednev won't let him.
Pope postures up in Sednev's guard and throws a big left but Sednev blocks it.

Sednev not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Pope missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Pope accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Pope postures up in Sednev's guard and throws a big left but Sednev blocks it.
Pope in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Sednev looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Pope has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Sednev is proving hard to escape from.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Pope changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Sednev looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Sednev sneaks back into half guard.
Sednev keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Pope is nestled in close to Sednev, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Pope wants to stand but Sednev has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Sednev makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Sednev.
Pope missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Pope wants to stand but Sednev has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sednev controls Pope momentarily but Pope frees himself.
Sednev has Pope pulled in close to control his posture.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Pope fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sednev sprawls well initially but Pope persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Pope is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Sednev sees it coming and defends easily.

Sednev is defending against the submission attempts here by Pope.

Pope is working for an americana but Sednev has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Pope was thinking about the submission.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Pope is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Sednev can do to turn this around?

Sednev working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pope doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pope manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Sednev is breathing heavily.
Pope wants to stand and escape but instead Sednev has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Sednev looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Pope throws a big right hand that misses.
Sednev has a closed guard, preventing Pope from standing up.

Pope postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Sednev is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Pope, into his guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
The fight stays on the outside here - Pope looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Pope shoots in and gets a takedown into Sednev's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pope loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Sednev is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Pope preventing the sweep.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Pope shoots for a double leg takedown but Sednev sprawls well. He's pushed Pope's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Sednev gets tackled into the cage by Pope. Pope maintains the clinch.

Sednev pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Sednev throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Pope fails with a takedown attempt.
Sednev throws a counter combo.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sednev shoots in looking for a takedown but Pope manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Sednev's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Pope is looking to clinch but Sednev is avoiding it.

Sednev throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Pope tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sednev is in Pope's guard.

Pope uses the cage to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Loyd Pope dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Sednev leaves Pope with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Pope shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Sednev pinned against the cage. Sednev gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Pope tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Sednev defends well and Pope ends up having to push Sednev into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Loyd Pope. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sednev rushes Pope and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Sednev takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Sednev stops a takedown attempt from Pope.
Pope is trying to drag Sednev to the mat but Sednev just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Sednev controlling the action here for a moment.
Sednev has Pope pushed against the cage.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Pope misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Sednev.

Sednev pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sednev is defended easily by Pope.
Pope darts in looking for a takedown but Sednev gets double underhooks and turns Pope into the cage.
Sednev shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Pope but Pope pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Pope moves in looking to clinch but Sednev pushes him off.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Sednev has Pope up against the cage in a clinch.
Sednev prevents a takedown attempt there.

Sednev has clasped his hands together around Pope's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Pope sneaks back into half guard.
Pope trying to hold on to Sednev's head to control him but Sednev postures up.
Sednev wants to stand up but Pope is controlling the position.
Loyd Pope overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Sednev stops Pope from getting back to his feet.
Ground and pound from Sednev.

Sednev is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Pope moves into full guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pope keeping moving, preventing Sednev from controlling successfully.

And that's the end of the fight!
Alex Sednev comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Pope has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
