PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Bernard Russel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Aldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jose Aldo will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Bernard Russel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Jose Aldo!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Michael Johnstone and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Aldo looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Russel controlling the position.
Aldo wants to control from the top but Russel keeps moving.
Aldo throwing strikes but missing.
Aldo is looking to work some ground and pound but Russel has wrist control.
Aldo slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Russel has control of Aldo's left arm, preventing Aldo from doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Russel keeping full guard, as Aldo tries to pass.
Aldo trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Russel seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Aldo has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Horrible takedown attempt by Russel or perhaps it was just good defense by Aldo, which made it look bad.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!

Aldo is keen to just control but Russel is a slippery customer.
Russel knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Aldo on the ground.
Russel is looking to improve his position.
Aldo thows a huge punch but Russel dodges it nicely.

Russel wants to control but Aldo is keeping busy.

Aldo is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Russel doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Aldo.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Aldo is looking to stall here but Russel recovers full guard.
Aldo wants to control from the top but Russel keeps moving.

Aldo throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Russel works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Russel looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Aldo goes for a double leg but Russel avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Russel continues to drive forward.
Russel feinted with a counter takedown.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Russel.
Russel darts in looking for a takedown but Aldo gets double underhooks and turns Russel into the cage.
Russel shoots in for a takedown but Aldo shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bernard Russel. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Aldo sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Russel's guard.
Russel is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Aldo has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Russel won't allow Aldo to pass to mount.
Russel is controlling Aldo's position as best he can from this difficult position.

Aldo is trying to work for a kimura but Russel is defending well.
Aldo is breathing heavily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Aldo throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Aldo thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Russel moves into full guard.

Russel is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Aldo defends well.

Aldo throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Russel works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Russel has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Aldo can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Aldo wants to control from the top but Russel keeps moving.

Jose Aldo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Aldo is stalling here. Russel is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Aldo seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Russel has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Russel goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Aldo has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Russel but great work by Aldo.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Russel wants to control but Aldo postures up.
Russel is trying to get back to half guard.

Aldo thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Aldo sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Russel is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Bernard Russel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jose Aldo.
Aldo dives in for a single leg takedown but Russel sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Russel winds up and cracks Aldo with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Aldo is looking to improve his position.
Jose Aldo is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Russel is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

I think Aldo has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
