PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dave Woodhall (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kasak Kusuk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dave Woodhall!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kasak Kusuk!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Eliza Hachem and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kusuk tries to land a leg kick but Woodhall saw it coming and moves away.
Woodhall throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Kusuk feints the counter takedown.
Kusuk moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Kusuk throws a leg kick but Woodhall moved away.
Kusuk displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Woodhall.
No joy there for Kusuk, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Kusuk throws a half hearted mid kick.

Kusuk gets tackled into the cage by Woodhall. Woodhall maintains the clinch.
Kusuk is trying to push Woodhall away but Woodhall has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Woodhall prevents a takedown attempt there.
Woodhall gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Kusuk.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kusuk is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Kusuk is trying to pull guard but Woodhall turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Dave Woodhall has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kasak Kusuk.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Woodhall seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Kusuk is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Kusuk chips away with some ground and pound.

Woodhall is looking for a triangle but Kusuk pushes his legs off easily.
Woodhall looking for a sweep. Not yet Woodhall, not yet.

Kusuk has gone for a leg lock! Woodhall slips out almost immediately though and dives into Kusuk's guard.

Woodhall is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Kusuk avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Kusuk has his foot on Woodhall's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Woodhall works his way back into a safe position though.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Woodhall fails to land the takedown.
Woodhall keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Kusuk throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Woodhall looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.
Kusuk has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Woodhall is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Kusuk throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Nice sprawl there from Kusuk as Woodhall shoots in.

Woodhall gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Woodhall has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kusuk uses from the top position.
Kusuk with a flurry of punches that miss.
Kusuk trying to control the position from guard on top but Woodhall is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kusuk must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Woodhall has momentary wrist control but Kusuk slips an elbow through the middle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Dave Woodhall will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Kusuk tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Woodhall tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Kusuk manages to circle out of the way.

Kusuk misses with a series of wild punches.
Kusuk fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Woodhall checks it well.

Woodhall tries to counter by clinching up but Kusuk breaks away and moves out of range.
Woodhall throws a body punch but Kusuk moves out of range.

and Woodhall moves into the clinch.
Woodhall creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Kusuk's defenses.

Woodhall pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Kusuk attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Woodhall attempts a counter takedown but Kusuk avoids it well and moves away.

Kusuk has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Woodhall avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Kusuk throwing strikes but missing.
Kusuk won't allow Woodhall to sweep him here.
Kusuk throws a big elbow that misses.
Woodhall avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Woodhall is adopting a defensive guard.
Woodhall is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Woodhall has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Woodhall avoids the attempt from Kusuk to control.
Kusuk reaches up to try and control the position but Woodhall seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Kusuk rolls and tries to escape and now Woodhall has his back!

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kusuk rolls, trying to escape but Woodhall keeps control of the position.
Kusuk trying to control the action but Woodhall just sinks the hooks in.
Kusuk covering up well under a series of strikes from Woodhall.
Woodhall misses with a punch to the head.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Woodhall looking to break Kusuk's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Kusuk remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Woodhall will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Woodhall really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Kusuk.

Woodhall on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Woodhall goes for a double leg but Kusuk avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Kusuk continues to drive forward.
Woodhall looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Kusuk is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Woodhall with a body shot.

Kusuk jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Woodhall walks away with a smile on his face. Kusuk gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Kusuk misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Dave Woodhall is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Kusuk pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Kusuk throws a head kick but Woodhall moves out of range.
It looked like Woodhall was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Kusuk is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Woodhall fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Woodhall manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Kusuk on his heels. He'll look to pass Kusuk's guard now, I'm sure.

Woodhall decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Kusuk lunges at Woodhall with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Woodhall's hand.

Kusuk walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Woodhall checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Woodhall takes one to the chin there.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Kusuk motions for Woodhall to come forward. Kusuk throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Woodhall clinches up against the cage.
Woodhall lands an elbow inside.

Woodhall has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kusuk uses from the top position.
Kusuk lands a couple of digs.
Woodhall tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Kusuk working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Woodhall's head.
Kusuk throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Woodhall had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Kusuk defends it easily.
Kusuk stops Woodhall from standing up.
Kusuk working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Woodhall's head.
Kusuk postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Woodhall avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Kusuk trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Woodhall is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Kusuk distracts Woodhall with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Kusuk postures up and lands a big shot to Woodhall's brow.
Kusuk throws a big right hand that misses.
Woodhall might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Woodhall wants to sweep but no luck.
Kusuk is looking to work some ground and pound but Woodhall has wrist control.
Kusuk with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Kusuk connects with a couple of short punches.
Kusuk cracks Woodhall with a solid left hand.
Kusuk is looking to work some ground and pound but Woodhall has wrist control.

Woodhall working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kusuk doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kusuk manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Kusuk works over Woodhall with some ground and pound from guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kasak Kusuk comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Woodhall has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
