Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Penn and Hai Shang. Penn comes to the cage accompanied by Everything in its right place. James Penn is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 wins, 4 losses and 1 draws, fighting out of Hilo, James Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 wins, 9 losses and 1 draws, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hai Shang!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Chris Saunders and Roger Salmon.



The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn's jab looks to have found its range, popping Shang under the eye.
Penn takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Penn dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Shang will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
A big left from Penn misses.
Jab by Shang.
Shang moves out of range as Penn strikes.
Penn misses with a straight right.

Penn tries to keep at a distance but Shang has taken the fight into the clinch.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Shang creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Shang working aggressively here.
Shang will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Penn up against the cage.
Penn avoids the elbow strike from Shang, against the cage.

Penn avoiding damage as Shang throws knees to the body.
Shang pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Penn takes an elbow to the temple.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Shang obliges.
Shang struggles to land a body shot inside as Penn controls his hands.
Penn dodges an elbow strike from Shang.
Penn avoids the elbow strike from Shang, against the cage.
Shang misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Penn.
Shang misses with an elbow strike.
I was talking to Penn's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Shang pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Penn blocks the elbow strike.
Penn blocks an uppercut.
Shang lands a nice uppercut.
Shang prevents a takedown attempt there.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shang throws a punch but it's blocked by Penn.
Shang lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Shang misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Penn blocks an uppercut.
Penn jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Shang walks away with a smile on his face. Penn gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Penn is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Shang.
Shang walks into a straight right hand from Penn.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Shang scores with a hook.
Shang thuds his right hand into Penn's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Shang throws a leg kick which misses Penn's front leg but catches the back leg as Penn tries to avoid it.
Penn pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

Shang drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Penn controlling Shang's posture.
Shang working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Penn controls Shang momentarily but Shang frees himself.
Penn looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Shang throwing strikes but missing.
Penn might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Shang accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Penn looking for a sweep. Not yet Penn, not yet.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Penn is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Penn scores with the left hand. Shang knows he should have avoided that one.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Penn - that will leave a mark!
Penn avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Shang dodges the punch combination from Penn.
Shang moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Good leg kick by Shang there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Shang closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Penn to the mat! Penn manages to get full guard.
Shang working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Shang throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Penn bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shang's guard.
Penn tries to free his leg and advance position but Shang is retaining full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hai Shang dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A jab lands there for Shang.
Penn throws a hook but Shang avoids it easily.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Penn throws an overhand right that lands on Shang's shoulder, as Shang tries to avoid the shot.
A jab from Penn misses.
Penn is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Shang takes one on the button.
Shang looks to land a left hand but Penn moved out of range nicely.
It looked like Penn wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Shang has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Shang swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Shang misses with a leg kick
and Penn cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Penn misses with a double jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Penn jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Shang throws a low kick but Penn avoids it.
Shang throws a head kick that misses.
Penn slips under a jab from Shang.
A little feinted left hand from Penn on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn misses with a right hand
and Shang counters with a solid body kick.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Shang lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Penn has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Penn and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
A little feinted left hand from Penn on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Shang fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Penn manages to avoid it.
As Shang looks to move away, Penn throws a big counter combo bu Shang just gets out of the way.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Penn, right into the meat.
Shang tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Penn is able to avoid easily.

Shang drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Penn preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Shang throwing strikes but missing.
Penn keeping moving, preventing Shang from controlling successfully.
Penn is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Shang stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Penn throws up his legs and catches Shang in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Shang tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Penn! That came out of nowhere!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). James Penn!
