The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kong throws a shot from downtown. Hughes moves away and avoids it.
Kong throws an overhand right that lands on Hughes's shoulder, as Hughes tries to avoid the shot.
A big left from Kong misses.
Benoit Kong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hughes will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

The fighters circle momentarily. Kong darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hughes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kong swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Hughes has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kong can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Hughes isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Kong stacks Hughes on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Kong!

Hughes had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Kong is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Hughes Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Kong's back instead.

and Hughes counters with a series of strikes. Kong will be more careful next time no doubt.

No joy there for Kong, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Hughes tries to close the distance and clinch but Kong swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

and Hughes counters with a shoot takedown. Kong fights it but they end up in guard.
