PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jamel Bernard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Alex (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Jamel Bernard has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jamel Bernard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jack Alex!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Alex closes the distance and pushes Bernard back into the cage.
Bernard tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Alex smiles and moves away.
Alex throws a right and a left that Bernard avoids nicely.
It looked like Bernard wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.

Alex closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Bernard quickly recovers to half guard.
Alex slows the pace down in half guard.

Alex is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Alex in particular looking to stall.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Bernard is trying to control but can't.
Alex passes into side control, despite Bernard's attempt to control the position.

Alex has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Alex gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Alex manages to pull guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alex wants to sweep here but Bernard controlling him for the moment.
Alex is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Bernard dives into side control.

Alex struggling a bit here.
Alex throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.
Alex is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Alex tries to improve position but can't.

Bernard has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Alex drives through with a takedown into Bernard's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Alex throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Alex is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Bernard tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Bernard not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Bernard trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

Bernard escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Alex gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Bernard can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Alex controls the pace.

Bernard working for submissions but it's allowed Alex to get to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Alex tries to pass the half guard into mount. Bernard knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Alex is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Alex lands a nice short elbow.
Alex is taking a breather. Bernard says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Alex works his foot free and advances to mount.
Bernard is looking to get to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Alex dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Alex takes the fight into the clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Bernard's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Alex stalling against the cage.
Alex gets through Bernard's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Bernard taking a breather.

Bernard is trying to trip Alex. He has hold of a leg but Alex is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Bernard persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Alex is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Bernard presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Alex wants the takedown. Bernard is fighting it off but Alex persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Bernard's guard against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Alex working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Bernard's head.

Alex decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Bernard, up you get!

Bernard shoots in for a takedown but Alex shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Alex throws out a counter right but Bernard avoids it with no problem.
Bernard fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Alex clinches up against the cage.
Bernard fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jamel Bernard. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Alex breaks from the clinch.

Alex takes the fight into the clinch.
Alex gets underhooks to prevent Bernard's takedown attempt.
A frustrated look appears on Bernard's face as he tries to break the clinch.
With the fighters up against the cage, Alex throws an elbow but misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bernard has had enough of the clinch but Alex keeps him there for the moment.
Bernard is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Alex to keep the fight standing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Alex pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Alex bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Alex creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.

Alex decides to stand back up.

Alex pushes Bernard up against the cage in a clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
A short body shot lands from Alex as the two fighters clinch.

Alex manages to break the clinch.
Alex throws a head kick that misses.

Bernard gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Bernard will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Alex working some strikes from top position.

Alex postures up and lands a big shot to Bernard's brow.
Alex slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Jack Alex has got the better of the ground game so far.
Alex working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Alex controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Alex postures up.
Alex sitting in guard, not really doing much.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Bernard is trying to keep Alex in close.

Bernard is working an open guard so Alex takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Alex closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Alex lands in his opponent's guard.
Alex wants to stand but Bernard has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Alex sitting in guard here, content to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Alex showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Alex controls from within his opponent's guard.
Alex wants to control from the top but Bernard keeps moving.

Alex pushes down on Bernard's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Alex performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Alex is continuing to stall.
It looks like Alex is going to stand back up.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Alex is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Bernard!

Bernard is trying desperately to improve position.
Bernard is squirming around, avoiding Alex's attempts to control the action.
Alex controlling his opponent.

Alex wants to control the pace but Bernard is squirming around nicely.

Alex is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Bernard shoots in looking for a takedown. Alex tries to sprawl out of it but Bernard keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Alex manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Alex throws a head kick that misses.
Bernard really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Bernard will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Alex shoots in and bounces Bernard off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Bernard throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Alex escapes and throws Bernard's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Bernard is trying to escape the position but Alex is controlling the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Jamel Bernard has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jack Alex is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jack Alex comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Alex has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
