PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Monty Dean (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Junior Menezes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Monty Dean has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Monty Dean!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Junior Menezes!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Leandro Rodrigues and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Menezes has closed the distance and engaged Dean in a clinch.
Dean could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Menezes manages to break the clinch.
Dean is looking to clinch but Menezes is avoiding it.

Menezes told us before the fight that he's been working on his elbows. An under utilised technique these days - let's see if it can sway the outcome of the fight.

Menezes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Menezes changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Dean looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Dean struggling a bit here.
Dean manages to get back to half guard.
Dean is trying to control but can't.

Menezes is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Menezes seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Dean is trying to get back to full guard.

Dean pushes Menezes off and gets back to his feet.

Menezes closes the distance and pushes Dean back into the cage.

Dean is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Menezes can't fight it off and eventually Dean manages to take the fight to the floor. Menezes looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Menezes had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Dean defends it easily.

Dean is looking to stand up but Menezes won't let him.
Menezes wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Dean is now in half guard.

Menezes wants to control but Dean is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Menezes is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Dean wants to get back to his feet.
Menezes tries to roll over but Dean keeps him under control.
Dean tries to stand but can't do so whilst Menezes controls his leg.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Menezes shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Menezes was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Dean struggling a bit here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Dean manages to get back to half guard.
Menezes seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Junior Menezes will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Menezes closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Dean's guard.
Dean throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Menezes missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Menezes tries to stand but Dean is controlling from the bottom.
Dean is wriggling around but Menezes manages to pass to half guard.
Dean trying to hold on to Menezes's head to control him but Menezes postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Dean landing rabbit punches to the side of Menezes's head. Not doing much damage but still scoring a few points.
Menezes trying to mount his opponent but Dean defends it.

Dean has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Menezes is working away from the top position though.
Menezes blocks the strikes from Dean.
Menezes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Dean keeps working.
Dean blocking the ground and pound attempt from Menezes.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dean is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Menezes's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Menezes's back!

Dean is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Menezes knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Menezes for a finish.
Menezes tries to roll but Dean sticks to his back.
Menezes is breathing heavily.

Dean is not going to allow Menezes to sit and survive in this position.

Dean is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Menezes is defending well though. Dean let's go of the attempt for now.

Dean is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Menezes defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

Dean working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.

Menezes trying to control the position but Dean manages to sink in the hooks.
I really don't envy Menezes right now.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Dean controlling well, preventing Menezes from escaping the position.

Dean has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
Menezes turns into Dean and is now in his guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Menezes lands a couple of digs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Monty Dean will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Dean closes the distance and clinches up with Menezes, looking for a takedown. Dean pushes Menezes against the cage but Menezes circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
No luck for Dean with that takedown attempt.

Menezes throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Dean was covering up waiting for the punch and Menezes finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Menezes throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Dean works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Menezes won't allow Dean to get back to his feet.
Menezes stands and throws Dean's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Menezes tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Menezes takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Dean parries the strikes from Menezes easily there. Menezes is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Dean to escape.
Dean is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Menezes is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Dean is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Dean is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes.

The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Menezes's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.

Dean trying to control the hands but Menezes won't let him.
Menezes connects with a big shot to the side of Dean's head.
Menezes doesn't have the hooks in and Dean manages to turn into his guard.
Dean wants to control from the top but Menezes keeps moving.

Dean decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Menezes, up you get!

Menezes instigates a clinch.
Dean can't get the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Monty Dean. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Menezes pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Junior Menezes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Dean throws a push kick but Menezes slaps the foot to one side.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Menezes shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Menezes was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Dean wants to control but Menezes postures up.

And that's the end of the fight!
Junior Menezes comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Menezes has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
