PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Warren Wong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Petr Smirnov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Warren Wong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Petr Smirnov!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Fedor Mirinova and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wong shoots in and gets a takedown into Smirnov's guard.

Smirnov is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Wong gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Smirnov regains guard.
Smirnov is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Wong dives into side control.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Wong has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Wong goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Smirnov fails to land the takedown.
Wong is looking to counter punch.
Smirnov tries for a takedown but Wong sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Wong throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Smirnov shoots in but no luck this time.

Wong shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Wong showed some decent athleticism there.

Wong looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Wong is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Smirnov wants to clinch up but Wong keeps it at a distance.

and Wong counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

We've been informed that Smirnov has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Smirnov pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Petr Smirnov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smirnov misses with a body shot.
It appears Wong was looking to counter with a kick there.
Wong leaves Smirnov with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Smirnov moves out of range of the body kick from Wong.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Wong tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Smirnov shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Wong but Wong pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Wong lands a head kick. Smirnov smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Wong fails with a takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smirnov will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Wong is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Smirnov can do to turn this around?

Smirnov tries to close the distance and clinch but Wong swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Smirnov pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Smirnov uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Wong.

Smirnov tries to sprawl but Wong drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Smirnov makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Warren Wong is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Smirnov shoots in looking for a takedown. Wong tries to sprawl out of it but Smirnov keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wong manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Wong moves into the clinch.
Wong really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Wong breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Wong dives in for a single leg takedown but Smirnov sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Smirnov avoids the head kick by Wong.
Wong throws a sloppy head kick and Smirnov moves out of range easily.

Smirnov rushes Wong and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Smirnov tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Wong avoids it.
Wong tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Smirnov smiles and moves away.

Smirnov shoots in for a takedown but Wong shows good takedown defense.

Smirnov closes the distance and clinches up with Wong, looking for a takedown. Smirnov pushes Wong against the cage but Wong circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Smirnov throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wong's waist but Wong gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Smirnov off to one side.
Wong throws a right hand that Smirnov ducks under and follows up with a left that Smirnov also avoids with ease.
Smirnov is looking to clinch.
Smirnov looks to land a combination but Wong avoids it well.
Wong lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Smirnov swats away the attempt to clinch by Wong.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Horrible takedown attempt by Smirnov or perhaps it was just good defense by Wong, which made it look bad.
Wong tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Smirnov manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Wong misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Wong shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Smirnov pinned against the cage. Smirnov gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wong decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Smirnov, up you get!
Smirnov fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Wong avoids it really well and circles away.
Wong appears to be looking for a big counter.
Wong tries a head kick but it misses.
Wong pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Wong just misses with a punch to the body.
Wong throws a head kick but Smirnov moves out of range.

Smirnov forces Wong back against the cage and clinches.
A nice left hand lands by Smirnov.

Wong gets control of Smirnov's arms and successfully pulls guard. Wong will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Wong looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Wong throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Smirnov must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Wong is looking to stand up but Smirnov isn't so interested in that idea.

Smirnov throws a big right hand that misses.
Wong has control of Smirnov's left arm, preventing Smirnov from doing any damage.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Smirnov tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Wong paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Wong is trying to pull guard but Smirnov turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Wong jumps guard but Smirnov stands there with Wong around his waist. Wong gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Smirnov gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Wong regains guard.
Wong bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smirnov's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smirnov is controlling Wong's posture.
Wong slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Wong stands up and waves to Smirnov to follow him.
Wong tries for a takedown but Smirnov sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Smirnov shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Wong but Wong pushes him off and we're back to square one.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smirnov takes a head kick and keeps coming.

And that's the end of the fight!
Warren Wong showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Wong, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
