PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Douglas Pondingham (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carrera Villamora (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Douglas Pondingham!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Carrera Villamora!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Nard Betker and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A clash of legs there as Pondingham blocks the low kick.
Villamora throws a hook but Pondingham blocks it.
Pondingham scores to the head and body with a nice combination!


It looks like Carrera Villamora has been cut.
Douglas Pondingham seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pondingham will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Pondingham fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Pondingham looks to land a combination but Villamora avoids it well.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Villamora has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

and Villamora counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Pondingham is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Villamora is trying to control the position but Pondingham postures up.

Pondingham is looking to work some ground and pound but Villamora has wrist control.

Villamora lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Pondingham regains half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Villamora lands a nice short elbow.
Villamora missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Pondingham gets back to full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
A looping hook to the body misses from Pondingham. Villamora does a little dance to reset his feet.
Villamora throws out a counter right but Pondingham avoids it with no problem.

Pondingham shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Villamora manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Pondingham throws a strike but Villamora rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Villamora loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Pondingham is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pondingham looking for a sweep. Not yet Pondingham, not yet.
Pondingham utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Pondingham is adopting a defensive guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pondingham trying to keep a closed guard but Villamora is proving a slippery customer.
Pondingham pulls Villamora in close to prevent any damage.
Villamora content to stall in guard here.
Villamora must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Pondingham wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Douglas Pondingham dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Pondingham closes the distance and clinches up with Villamora, looking for a takedown. Pondingham pushes Villamora against the cage but Villamora circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Villamora is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Pondingham on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Pondingham changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Villamora tries to avoid it but Pondingham manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Villamora to the ground. Villamora escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Villamora tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Pondingham tries to bum rush Villamora with a series of wild strikes but Villamora uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Pondingham throws a right and a left that Villamora avoids nicely.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Douglas Pondingham. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pondingham shoots in for a takedown but Villamora shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Villamora with the counter takedown but Pondingham avoids it easily.
Good leg kick by Villamora there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Pondingham misses with a body shot.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pondingham throws a right and a left that Villamora avoids nicely.
Villamora throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Pondingham half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Villamora fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Pondingham tries to score a power double leg takedown but Villamora sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Pondingham somewhat.
Villamora is trying to counter with his kicks.

Pondingham fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Villamora shapes to counter with a head kick.

Villamora throws a big overhand right that connects, sending Pondingham tumbling to the canvas!


Pondingham is rocked!


Douglas Pondingham's cut is getting worse.
Villamora loads up on a big left hand. Pondingham felt that one! He's just covering up now, not defending himself intelligently - Villamora looks towards the ref and unloads with 3 more big shots and the ref has no choice but to stop the fight! Pondingham can't hide his disappointment, as Villamora celebrates the victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:41 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Carrera Villamora!
Jumping up and down and very excited, Carrera Villamora waved his t-shirt featuring VICIOUS FIGHT GEAR's logo in front of the cameras.
