PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Modesto Hodges (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Gornik (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Michael Gornik will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of London, Modesto Hodges!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Michael Gornik!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Andrew Berry and Phil Schofield.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gornik moves into the clinch.

Hodges has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Gornik is trying to keep an underhook but Hodges manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Hodges seems to be looking for submissions.
Gornik is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Gornik missing with punches from the bottom.
Gornik is looking to control Hodges's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gornik avoid being mounted?
Gornik controlling the position well.
Hodges missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gornik is trying to get back to full guard.
Gornik is trying to maintain the position but Hodges is very close to passing his half guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Hodges is working for a submission of some sort.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Hodges throws a head kick that misses.
Hodges throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gornik's waist but Gornik gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hodges off to one side.
Hodges looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Hodges defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Gornik.

Gornik moves into range and clinches up with Hodges.
Hodges is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Modesto Hodges. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Gornik.
Hodges wants a takedown but no success here.
Gornik is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Gornik breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gornik is defended easily by Hodges.
Hodges wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Hodges wants to clinch up but Gornik keeps it at a distance.

Gornik gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hodges to score an easy takedown into full guard.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Gornik manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Gornik jumps guard and drags Hodges to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Hodges has gone for a leg lock! Gornik slips out almost immediately though and dives into Hodges's guard.
Gornik is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Gornik slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gornik scoring with some ground and pound.
Gornik is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Gornik pushing down on Hodges's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hodges is looking for a sweep. Gornik is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Gornik not doing much here.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Gornik wants to stand up but Hodges has a hold of him and won't allow it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Michael Gornik dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Gornik fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gornik misses with a two punch combination.
Gornik has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Gornik fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Hodges closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Hodges lands in his opponent's guard.

Gornik has his feet on Hodges's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Michael Gornik seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hodges shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gornik but Gornik pushes him off and we're back to square one.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gornik closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Hodges is looking to reverse the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gornik in side control lands a decent elbow.
Hodges is letting Gornik control him for a moment.

Gornik decides to stand back up. Gornik steps back and let's Hodges get back to his feet.
Hodges tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Gornik defends well and Hodges ends up having to push Gornik into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Crunch! Gornik slams his shin into Hodges's torso.
Gornik fails with a takedown attempt.

Gornik moves into range and clinches up with Hodges.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gornik drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Hodges gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Modesto Hodges has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Michael Gornik.
Hodges drops down looking for an ankle pick but Gornik pulls his leg out and moves away.
Gornik goes for a high kick. It partially lands.


It looks like Modesto Hodges has been cut.
Hodges fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gornik wants to counter with a clinch but Hodges pushes him away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Hodges gets tackled into the cage by Gornik. Gornik maintains the clinch.

Gornik manages to break the clinch.
Hodges shoots in but Gornik avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Hodges could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Gornik has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Hodges avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Gornik stalls.
Hodges jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Gornik walks away with a smile on his face. Hodges gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hodges fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gornik throws a combination that misses
and Hodges counters with a one-two to the body.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Gornik manages to pull guard.

Hodges is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gornik is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Gornik has escaped and now he's on top!
Gornik lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Michael Gornik showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!



Gornik closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gornik lands in his opponent's guard.

Gornik stands and throws Hodges's legs to the side, diving into side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gornik remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Gornik is working to tighten his grip on Hodges's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Hodges has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Gornik is really squeezing tight and eventually Hodges passes out! Gornik breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
