PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Steve Mezza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Boris Xisco (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Steve Mezza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Boris Xisco!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Sergei Dronov and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mezza will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Mezza throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Mezza could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Xisco showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Mezza.
Xisco keeps the fight on the outside.
Xisco tries to clinch but Mezza is having none of it.

Mezza closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Mezza lands in his opponent's guard.
Xisco looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Xisco wriggles free and stands up.
Mezza shoots in for a takedown but Xisco shows good takedown defense.

Xisco tries to kick Mezza off but Mezza keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Xisco is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Mezza stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Xisco to get to his feet.

and Mezza counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Mezza is thwarting Xisco's attempts to control the position.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Mezza connects with a nice short shot to Xisco's temple.
Mezza tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Mezza is tying to control. Xisco wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Xisco is trying to control but can't.
Mezza is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Mezza cracks a nice hook into Xisco's ribs.
Xisco misses with a two punch combination.

Mezza feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Mezza slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Mezza postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Mezza decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Xisco, up you get!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Mezza throws an elbow but it misses.

Xisco is trying to trip Mezza. He has hold of a leg but Mezza is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Xisco persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Xisco must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Mezza shoots in but Xisco avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve Mezza. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Xisco tries to land a leg kick but Mezza saw it coming and moves away.

Mezza fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Xisco sprawls well initially but Mezza persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Mezza is looking to advance position but Xisco won't allow it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Mezza looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Xisco bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Mezza working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Xisco doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Xisco manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Mezza had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Xisco is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Mezza Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Xisco's back instead.

Mezza has got his arm under Xisco's chin working for the choke… has he got it? It looks pretty tight! Oh! Xisco has spun round into Mezza's guard beautifully! Well done that man!

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

and Xisco counters with an outside leg kick.
Xisco shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Mezza makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Mezza lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Mezza shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Xisco pinned against the cage. Xisco gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Mezza is looking to wear down Xisco with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Xisco can do anything to dispel that myth.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mezza, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
