PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Will Stone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Desmond Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nelson has chosen skillet ~ monster as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Will Stone!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Desmond Nelson!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Roosa Järviläinen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stone slaps away a takedown attempt from Nelson, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Nelson fails with the takedown

and Stone decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Nelson's guard.

Nelson has his feet on Stone's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Stone drives through and clinches with Nelson against the cage.

Stone ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Stone no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Nelson trying to control but Stone is working from the bottom.

Stone working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Nelson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Nelson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stone pulls Nelson in close to his closed guard and prevents Nelson from doing any damage or advancing position.

Nelson pushes down on Stone's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Stone is looking for a sweep. Nelson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Nelson is trying to control. Stone wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Stone really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Stone gets full guard.
Nelson won't allow Stone to sweep him here.
Nelson throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Stone wants to stand but Nelson is controlling the position.
Nelson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stone swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Stone has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Nelson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Nelson throws a big elbow that misses.
Nelson passes into half guard.
Nelson frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Nelson wants to control the pace but Stone is squirming around nicely.
Nelson unloads with some shots from mount but Stone bucks and avoids them well.

Nelson wants to take Stone's back here but Stone is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.

Stone wants to hold on but Nelson pushes him away.

Nelson goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Stone turns into him and now he's in Nelson's guard.

Nelson utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Nelson pulls Stone in close to prevent any damage.
Stone has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Nelson can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Stone controls the pace.
Nelson is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Stone wants to stand and escape but instead Nelson has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Stone is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Nelson has gone for a leg lock! Stone slips out almost immediately though and dives into Nelson's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Desmond Nelson will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Stone looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Nelson makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Will Stone is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Stone is trying to control. Nelson wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Stone knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Nelson on the ground.

Stone content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Stone is pressing down on Nelson's thigh, looking to free his foot. Nelson is holding on for now.
Desmond Nelson has got the better of the ground game so far.
Stone thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Nelson's head.
Nelson wants to get back to full guard.
Stone trying to control from half guard but Nelson is working away.
Nelson is trying to stand.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Stone shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Stone was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Nelson bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Nelson connects with a body shot that sends Stone's belly button to the back.

Stone drives through with a takedown into guard.
Stone wants to control from the top but Nelson keeps moving.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Nelson trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Stone will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Nelson looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Stone tries to stand and escape but Nelson is controlling the position.

Nelson slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Stone trying to control but Nelson is working from the bottom.
Nelson is trying to control the position but Stone postures up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Nelson has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Stone is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Nelson.
Nelson tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Stone wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The strikes coming from Stone are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Stone decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Nelson fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Nelson throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Desmond Nelson will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Stone misses with a straight left.
Stone displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Nelson.
Nelson throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Nelson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Stone throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

Stone darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Nelson pushes Stone off and gets back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Nelson closes this distance looking for a takedown but Stone circles away.

Stone rushes Nelson and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Nelson is trying to break the clinch but Stone is controlling him.

Stone gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Nelson is trying to maintain the position but Stone is very close to passing his half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Nelson manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Nelson throws his legs up looking for a submission but Stone uses it to pass to side control.
Stone lands a nice forearm strike.
Stone working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Nelson is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Stone is controlling the pace.
Nelson is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Stone's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Stone's back!

Nelson is looking for the choke from the back position but Stone is controlling his hands well.
Nelson controlling well, preventing Stone from escaping the position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Nelson is cranking Stone's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Stone! He's tightened the choke and Stone is tapping out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Desmond Nelson!
Desmond Nelson was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
