PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Gray (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Max Major (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Max Major told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Carlos Gray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Max Major!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Paul Tew and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gray is looking to land body kicks.
Gray throws a push kick but Major slaps the foot to one side.

Major scores with a takedown into Gray's guard.
Gray could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Gray wants to sweep but no luck.
Major pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gray is keeping the position for now.

Gray isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Major stacks Gray on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Major!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Major wants to stand but Gray is controlling his arm.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Major gets to mount! Gray was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Major with a couple of short strikes.

Major jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Gray is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Gray and Major has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Gray is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Major is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Major takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Gray takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Gray tries to lock up and control but Major gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Major trying to control but Gray is having none of it.
Gray is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Gray keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gray squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Major looking to control and managing it successfully.
Gray tries to lock up and control but Major gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Major is landing with some decent strikes but Gray is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Major controlling the pace for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Major has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Gray's face.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Major closes this distance looking for a takedown but Gray circles away.
Carlos Gray is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Major fails with a takedown attempt.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Major.
Carlos Gray has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Max Major.
Gray throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Major takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Major looks to land a combination but Gray avoids it well.

Major darts in and clinches Gray up against the cage.

Major fails to land the takedown.
Gray drops down looking for a counter takedown but Major sprawls and moves away.
Gray lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Major looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Major dives in and grabs Gray's left leg, looking for a takedown. Gray pushes down on Major's head and hops out.
Major fails with a takedown attempt.
Major is breathing heavily.

Major decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Gray is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Major pulls his head out easily.
Gray wants to control but Major is keeping busy.
Gray might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Gray throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Major stalling.
Gray has a hand on Major's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Major takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Major prevents Gray from getting the reversal.
Major with good strikes from the mount here!
Major trying to control but Gray is having none of it.

Gray is trying desperately to improve position.
Major takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Gray is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Gray is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Gray is trying to escape the mount.
Major tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gray wants to hold on but Major pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Max Major showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Major has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Gray gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Major can do anything to dispel that myth.
Major preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Major trying to control but Gray postures up.

Gray is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Major desperately trying to maintain half guard.

Gray is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Major defends it well.

Major tries to kick Gray off but Gray keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Major is looking for a sweep. Gray is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Major is staying active underneath Gray, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Gray is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Gray is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Gray throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

Major shoots in and bounces Gray off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Gray is wriggling around but Major manages to pass to half guard.

Gray is looking to control Major's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gray avoid being mounted?
Gray wants to get back to full guard.
Gray flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Max Major has got the better of the ground game so far.

Major trying to control the pace.
Gray wants to improve his position but Major is controlling well.
Gray slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gray is on top in guard.


Gray has gone for a leg lock! Major slips out almost immediately though and dives into Gray's guard.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Major throws an elbow that misses. Gray uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Major's guard. Nice move by Gray!

Gray is looking to stand up but Major won't let him.
Major trying to control the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Major has a closed guard, preventing Gray from standing up.
Carlos Gray has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Max Major is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Carlos Gray.
I think Major has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
