PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Yong Winters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rune Ank (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Ank's choice of entrance music: Animals. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Rune Ank!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, James Ackerman and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ank listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.


It looks like Yong Winters has been cut.

Ank moves into range and clinches up with Winters.
Ank wants to take the fight to the mat but Winters manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Ank wants to break free but Winters has control.
Winters blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Ank has clasped his hands together around Winters's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Winters throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.
Winters tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Winters manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Ank not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Winters wants to get back to full guard but Ank has mounted him!

Ank is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Winters has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Winters!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Ank wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Winters manages to pass to side control.

Winters is working for a kimura but Ank is defending it quite comfortably.
Winters prevents Ank from standing back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Ank taking some punishment here, with Winters in his half guard.

Winters is looking for submissions but instead, Ank has regained full guard.
Ank wants to stand up but Winters is controlling him.
Winters postures up and lands a big shot to Ank's brow.
Winters in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Winters throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Winters postures up in Ank's guard and throws a big left but Ank blocks it.

Ank has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Winters has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Ank is trying to pull guard but Winters has him pressed against the cage.
Stalling in the clinch from Winters.
Ank makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Winters jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Ank walks away with a smile on his face. Winters gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Ank closes the distance and clinches.
Ank is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Winters looking for a takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Yong Winters. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Ank breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Ank misses with a wild combination.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Ank instigates a clinch.
Winters is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Ank has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Winters uses from the top position.
Winters is standing up over Ank. Ank looks to escape but Winters dives into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Ank is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Winters is controlling him well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Winters checks a leg kick nicely.
It looked like Winters was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Ank rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Winters moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
As Ank tries to get set, Winters tries to push him back and clinch up but Ank manages to avoid the attempt.
Ank misses with a right hand

and Winters counters by moving into the clinch.

Winters is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Ank can't fight it off and eventually Winters manages to take the fight to the floor. Ank looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Winters prevents Ank from getting back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Winters loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Ank wants to stand and escape but Winters is having none of it.
Winters connects with a couple of short punches.
Ank is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Winters is controlling him.
Winters throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Ank works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Winters throwing strikes but missing.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Ank lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Ank misses with a series of wild punches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Winters closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Ank is trying to stand back up but Winters is controlling him

Winters postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Ank to stand up.
Winters dodges the punch combination from Ank.
Ank is breathing heavily.
Ank goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Winters shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ank but Ank pushes him off and we're back to square one.

and Ank connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Ank throws a right and a left that both miss.
As Ank tries to get set, Winters tries to push him back and clinch up but Ank manages to avoid the attempt.
Left hook, right uppercut from Ank.


Winters is rocked!
Ank misses with a wild combination.
Oh Winters is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ank moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Ank has managed to clinch.
Ank misses with a hook from the clinch.
Ank has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Ank scores with a shot to the side of Winters's head.

Winters ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Winters no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ank connects with a couple of short punches.
Winters striking off his back but it's not causing Ank any problems.

Winters is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Ank is aware though and is defending well.
Winters has a closed guard, preventing Ank from standing up.
Winters wants to get back to his feet but Ank is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Winters working for a triangle but Ank defends it easily.
Ank has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Winters is proving hard to escape from.
Winters utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Winters lands a couple of shots from the bottom.

Ank is sitting in close to Winters's body. Winters has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Ank is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Ank is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Winters.
