The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jackson darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mendez controlling the position well.
Mendez tries to get to full guard but Jackson has control of the leg.
Mendez is pressing down on Jackson's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mendez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Jackson is one step ahead there.

Jackson closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Mendez did well to prevent Jackson getting side control.
Jackson throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Mendez to regain full guard.
Mendez is pulling down on Jackson's head. It's preventing any offense from Jackson, at least for the moment.

Jackson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Mendez was covering up waiting for the punch and Jackson finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Jackson throws an elbow that misses. Mendez uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jackson's guard. Nice move by Mendez!

Jackson is trying to control Mendez's posture. Mendez takes advantage of the lull and advances to side control. He also appears to have an arm triangle here! Uh oh, big trouble for Jackson! Mendez is rotating here... this could be the end... Jackson is out! Mendez has ended this one emphatically! Great submission!
