UPG: Winter Olympics Round 1 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shogan Aye and Brian Burns. Burns has chosen Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three - The Roof Is On Fire as his entrance music. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 wins, 6 losses and 0 draws, fighting out of Amsterdam, Shogan Aye!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 wins, 10 losses and 0 draws, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brian Burns!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Paulsen Ambrosius and Nard Betker.



The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Burns checks a low kick from Aye.
Burns throws a leg kick
and Aye counters with a stiff right hand.
Good work by Aye as he checks the leg kick.
Burns ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Aye moves away.
Burns misses the shot to the body.
Burns throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Aye seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.

Aye closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Burns quickly recovers to half guard.
Burns wants to control but Aye passes into side.
Aye lands a nice forearm strike.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Burns is looking to regain half guard here but Aye keeps moving and retains side control.

Burns has his foot on Aye's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Aye works his way back into a safe position though.

A bone on bone clash there as Aye blocks the leg kick.
Aye looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.

Aye misses with a low kick as Burns jumps back.
Aye attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Aye misses with a lunging right hand
and Burns cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Aye looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Burns!
Burns is trying to control Aye's posture but Aye avoids it.
Burns is looking to regain half guard here but Aye keeps moving and retains side control.
Burns wants to control but Aye postures up.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Burns swings for the body but Aye moves out of range.
Aye uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Burns.
Burns throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Burns misses with a shot to the body
and Aye counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Aye is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Burns.
Aye connects with a single shot there.
Burns throws an off balance right hand
and Aye makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Burns really felt that one!
Aye looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Aye throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Burns sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Aye looks for the body kick but Burns saw that one coming.
Aye swats away the attempt to clinch by Burns.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Burns ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Aye moves away.
A looping hook to the body misses from Burns. Aye does a little dance to reset his feet.

Aye is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Burns can do to turn this around?
Aye goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Burns scores with the left hand. Aye knows he should have avoided that one.
A big right from Aye misses.
Burns connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
That kick from Aye tenderised Burns's leg. Burns is trying to keep his angry face on.

Burns looks to throw the jab but Aye is out of range.
Aye scoring well with a low kick there.
Burns will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Burns looks to land a left hand but Aye moved out of range nicely.
Burns throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Aye stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Burns pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Burns throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Burns ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Aye moves away.
Burns lands a nice looking body kick.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Burns, right into the meat.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Aye takes one on the button.
Aye buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Brian Burns seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Burns tries to score with a low kick but Aye moves his leg out of the way.
Burns is looking to land body kicks.
Aye avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Aye keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Burns throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Aye fails to land the takedown.
Aye stuffs the takedown.
Aye works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Burns avoids a low kick by using good footwork.
It seemed like Burns was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Aye takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Burns fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Aye to the ground. Burns is now in Aye's guard.
Burns is breathing heavily.
Burns with a flurry of punches that miss.
Aye has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Burns trying to control the position from guard on top but Aye is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Aye holds on and takes a little breather.
Aye is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Aye throwing shots but Burns is blocking nicely.

Aye looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Burns with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Burns has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
Burns wants to improve his position but Aye is controlling well.
Aye scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Burns trying to hold on to Aye's head to control him but Aye postures up.
Shogan Aye overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Burns works his way to full guard. Good work.

Burns escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Aye gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Burns not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Brian Burns will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

and Burns counters with a good, hard body kick but Aye shrugs it off.

Burns let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

Burns takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Aye dips to his left and cracks Burns with an uppercut!
Aye takes a swing at Burns's ribcage but misses.
Jab, jab by Burns - just one landing.
Aye fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Burns paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Aye throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Burns ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Aye uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Aye lands a nice shot to the body.
Burns is looking to score with low kicks.
Aye misses with a straight left.
Burns looks to clinch
and Aye counters with a good, hard body kick but Burns shrugs it off.
Burns takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Burns lands a head shot.
Aye fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Burns has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Burns moves out of range of the leg kick from Aye.
Aye misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Burns.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Aye.
Aye shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The crowd cheers as Burns lands an impressive looking overhand right. Aye doesn't seem phased though.
Aye thumps Burns with a low kick.
Aye throws a jab but it's blocked by Burns.
Aye looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Some bone on bone action there as Aye checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Burns shoots in for a takedown but Aye shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Aye throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Burns unleashes a big counter combination but Aye bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Aye throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Burns sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Burns takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Aye takes one on the button.
Aye uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Burns.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Burns crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Aye - the referee stops the clock and Burns gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Aye. Burns manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.

Burns swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Burns changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Burns lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Aye at a distance.
Burns throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Aye throws a good cross that connects.
Aye keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Burns.
Aye jabbing away but nothing is landing.

Burns moves out of range as Aye strikes.
Burns tries a quick counter leg kick but Aye is wise to it.

Burns's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Aye takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Aye uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.

Aye shoots in and bounces Burns off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Aye wants to control from the top but Burns keeps moving.
Burns controls Aye momentarily but Aye frees himself.

Burns working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Aye has passed into half guard!

And that's the end of the fight!
Shogan Aye showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Aye has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Shogan Aye decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
In defeat, Brian Burns stepped up to the mic, saying 'Hats off to my opponent. He was better tonight. I hope we meet again in the future.'.
