PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between David Silva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mauricio Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Velasquez's choice of entrance music: The Fire. Mauricio Velasquez is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, David Silva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mauricio Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Shigeki Sano and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Velasquez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Silva is trying to defend but Velasquez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Silva is trying to stand up here but Velasquez is controlling him well.
Silva tries to kick Velasquez off in order to stand up. Velasquez Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
Velasquez is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Silva's shoulder. That is not cool.
Silva can't do much from the bottom here.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Velasquez controlling the position from side mount.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Silva takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Silva is not content to let Velasquez control the position.
Silva is trying to improve his position.
Velasquez working the ground and pound but Silva is defending the strikes.
Silva is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Velasquez lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Silva down.
Silva manages to work his way to half guard, despite Velasquez's best efforts.

Silva gets full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Silva is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Silva wants to improve his position but instead Velasquez has moved into half guard.
Silva flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Velasquez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Silva is just riding it out for now. Velasquez eventually gives up the hold.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Velasquez is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Silva tries to roll over but Velasquez keeps him under control.
Velasquez not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Silva keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Velasquez decides to stand up.
Silva pulls out of a head kick attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Silva closes the distance looking to clinch

and Velasquez counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Silva!
Silva is breathing heavily.

Velasquez swings around for an armbar but Silva sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Velasquez's guard.
Silva is looking to stand up but Velasquez won't let him.
Silva stopping the sweep attempt from Velasquez.

Silva got a little sloppy there for a moment and Velasquez has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Silva has managed to get both his arms back between Velasquez's legs - danger averted.
Velasquez controls Silva momentarily but Silva frees himself.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Silva stands and throws Velasquez's legs to the side, diving into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mauricio Velasquez dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Velasquez is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Silva's half guard.
Velasquez is thwarting Silva's attempts to control the position.
Velasquez trying to control the pace.
Velasquez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Velasquez tries to stand and escape but Silva actually recovers to full guard.

Velasquez takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Velasquez trying to control the pace.
Velasquez seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Silva is defending against the submission attempts here by Velasquez.
Velasquez is keen to just control but Silva is a slippery customer.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Velasquez is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Silva has managed to free his arm - good work.
Velasquez controlling the pace.
Silva controlling the position for now.
Silva avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Velasquez.
Velasquez keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Velasquez is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Velasquez lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Velasquez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Silva keeps working.
Mauricio Velasquez has got the better of the ground game so far.
Silva misses with some strikes from the bottom.

Silva is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Velasquez has latched onto it... Big trouble! Velasquez pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Silva is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Velasquez!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Mauricio Velasquez!
Our winner, Mauricio Velasquez, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
