And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Douglas Costa!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Felipe Paraventi and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Alves looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Alves is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Costa.
Costa shoots for a double leg takedown but Alves sprawls well. He's pushed Costa's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

and Costa counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Alves!
Costa lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Alves is trying desperately to improve position.
Alves wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Alves can't escape the position.
Costa scores with punches from the back.
Costa cracks Alves with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Alves from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Costa controls the position.
Alves manages to reverse the position and now he's in Costa's guard. Nice work there by Alves.

Costa is trying to maintain the position but Alves is very close to passing his half guard.
Alves wants to control but Costa is keeping him busy.

Alves trying to control but Costa is working from the bottom.
Alves thows a big elbow that misses.
Alves trying to control the position from guard on top but Costa is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Alves tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Costa counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Alves!
Alves is trying to escape the mount.
Costa working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Alves tries to hold on but Costa pushes him away.
Alves is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Costa is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Costa working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Alves is squirming around, avoiding Costa's attempts to control the action.
Costa looks gassed!

Alves tries to improve his position but instead Costa has taken his back!

Alves has gone for a leg lock! Costa slips out almost immediately though and dives into Alves's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Alves wants to get back to full guard.

Costa gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Alves tries to clinch but Costa moves away

and Costa decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Alves's guard.

Costa is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Alves gets full guard.

Alves throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Alves had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Costa is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Alves Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Costa's back instead.
Alves doesn't have the hooks in and Costa manages to turn into his guard.
Alves is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Costa postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Costa gets to his feet. Alves looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Alves clinches but Costa breaks the clinch

so Costa counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Alves is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Douglas Costa showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Alves's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Alves swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Alves tries a head kick but it misses.

Costa shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Alves's guard.

Alves wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Costa is now in half guard.
Alves pushes Costa off looking to stand but Costa dives back in and keeps control.
Costa keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Let's hope that Costa has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Alves wants to get back to full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Costa is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Alves is just riding it out for now. Costa eventually gives up the hold.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Costa in particular looking to stall.
Costa wants to pass the guard but Alves is defending well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Alves is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Costa's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Costa's back!

Alves has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Costa has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Alves is working the ground and pound. Can Costa escape?

Alves looking to finish the fight with a rear naked choke. Costa is controlling Alves 's left arm and he spins nicely into guard.
Costa passes Alves's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Costa throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Costa performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Costa passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Alves!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Costa tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Alves can't escape the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Costa stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Thiago Alves has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Douglas Costa is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Alves throws a head kick but Costa moves out of range.

And that's the end of the fight!
