PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Andrew Weffart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jorge Santiago (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Weffart comes to the cage accompanied by Gay Bar - Electric 6. Jorge Santiago will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 10 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Andrew Weffart!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jorge Santiago!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Thiago Cunha and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Santiago scores with a one two! Weffart had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Santiago shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Weffart defends it nicely.
Santiago tries a head kick but it misses.
Weffart throws the kick towards the body but Santiago avoids it.
Santiago uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Weffart.

Weffart shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Santiago's guard.
Weffart throwing strikes from guard but Santiago blocks nicely.
Santiago not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Weffart trying to control the position from guard on top but Santiago is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Santiago wants to stand and escape but Weffart is having none of it.
Weffart looking to pass the guard.
Weffart is looking to advance position but Santiago has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Santiago misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Santiago tries to control but Weffart wriggling away.

Poor strikes thrown by Santiago there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Santiago is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Weffart has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage.
Weffart really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Santiago throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Weffart because Santiago loaded up on that one.
Weffart is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Santiago takes Weffart's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Weffart is in trouble.
Weffart trying to control but not successfully.

Weffart can't escape the position.

Weffart is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.

Santiago is looking for the choke from the back position but Weffart is controlling his hands well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Weffart trying to control but not successfully.
Santiago tries to get the hooks in deep but Weffart pushed the leg off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Santiago ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Weffart moves away.

Weffart shoots in and bounces Santiago off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Weffart passes into half guard.
Santiago is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Santiago is trying to control but can't.

Weffart is working for a kimura but Santiago is defending it quite comfortably.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Weffart lands with a punch from half guard.

Weffart is looking for a kimura but Santiago is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Weffart to get the leverage.
Santiago is trying to get back to full guard.
Weffart working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Santiago is trying to control but Weffart passes into side control!
You can see the frustration on Santiago's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Santiago is not content to let Weffart control the position.
Jorge Santiago has got the better of the ground game so far.

Weffart tries for a kimura but Santiago is defending well.
Santiago prevents Weffart from improving position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Weffart stands up.
Santiago is looking to land body kicks.
Weffart throws a big counter combination but Santiago scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Weffart clinches.
Santiago taking a breather.

Nice elbow from Santiago.

Santiago turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Santiago manages to end up in side control.
Weffart struggling a bit here.
Weffart is looking for a sweep.
Santiago trying to control the position but Weffart is working away.
Santiago wants to stand but Weffart is controlling his arm.
Weffart can't do much from the bottom here.
Santiago content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Weffart looking for a sweep but Santiago has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Santiago throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Weffart regains half guard.
Santiago trying to pass the guard but Weffart defending well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Santiago trying to advance position but Weffart counters by regaining guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Andrew Weffart will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!


The fight stays on the outside here - Santiago looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Horrible takedown attempt by Santiago or perhaps it was just good defense by Weffart, which made it look bad.

Weffart looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Santiago tries to kick Weffart off in order to stand up. Weffart Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.

Weffart tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Weffart is looking to take a break and control but Santiago is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Weffart keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Weffart looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Santiago trying to control here.

Weffart is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Weffart wants to lay and pray for a moment but Santiago keeps working.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Weffart is thwarting Santiago's attempts to control the position.
Santiago wants to control but Weffart passes into side.

Weffart looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Weffart has hold of Santiago's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Santiago tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Weffart cranks the arm and Santiago screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Santiago, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Andrew Weffart!
