PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Roy Kannemeyer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Koni Minichi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Koni Minichi is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Roy Kannemeyer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Koni Minichi!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Cecil Peabody and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Minichi has a takedown stuffed.
Kannemeyer looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!

Minichi moves into the clinch.
Minichi is looking for a takedown.
Minichi tries to stall but Kannemeyer uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Kannemeyer wants to take the fight to the mat but Minichi manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Kannemeyer manages to pull guard.
Minichi distracts Kannemeyer with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Minichi wants to pass the guard but Kannemeyer is keeping the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Minichi gets to his feet - Kannemeyer follows without any prompting.
Minichi fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Roy Kannemeyer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Koni Minichi.

Minichi is looking to clinch.
Minichi should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Minichi moves to clinch but Kannemeyer breaks away

and Kannemeyer counters with a nice double leg into side control. Minichi won't be happy with that.
Minichi tries to buck Kannemeyer off but Kannemeyer is having none of it.
Kannemeyer definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Kannemeyer throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Minichi is looking for a sweep.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Minichi can't do much from the bottom here.
Minichi pushes Kannemeyer away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Kannemeyer gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Minichi tries to improve position but can't.
Kannemeyer trying to control the position but Minichi is working away.
You can see the frustration on Minichi's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Kannemeyer remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Minichi is looking to clinch but Kannemeyer is avoiding it.
Minichi shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kannemeyer defends it nicely.
Kannemeyer drops down looking for a counter takedown but Minichi sprawls and moves away.

Minichi lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Minichi shoots for a takedown but Kannemeyer saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Minichi shoots in for a takedown but Kannemeyer shows good takedown defense.

Minichi drives through and clinches with Kannemeyer against the cage.

Kannemeyer escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Minichi shoots and misses

and Kannemeyer counters by moving into the clinch.

Minichi controls Kannemeyer momentarily but Kannemeyer frees himself.
Kannemeyer controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Kannemeyer trying to control but Minichi is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Roy Kannemeyer dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Minichi lands with a slapping head kick.
Kannemeyer doesn't manage to clinch there - Minichi circles away.

Minichi darts in and clinches Kannemeyer up against the cage.
Minichi lands an elbow inside.
Minichi is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Minichi escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Minichi shoots in but Kannemeyer avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Kannemeyer tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Minichi manages to circle out of the way.
Danga de danga de dang - Minichi scores with a four punch combination!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Minichi dives in and grabs Kannemeyer's left leg, looking for a takedown. Kannemeyer pushes down on Minichi's head and hops out.
Kannemeyer went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Minichi lands a high kick!
A jab from Minichi finds it's way through Kannemeyer's defenses.
Minichi pushes Kannemeyer away with a front kick.
Kannemeyer misses with a hook.

Minichi closes the distance and pushes Kannemeyer back into the cage.

Kannemeyer throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Minichi.
Minichi changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Kannemeyer leaves Minichi with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

This has been an exciting period of action!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Kannemeyer.
Minichi is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
Kannemeyer walks forward, straight into a front kick from Minichi.
Minichi shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kannemeyer defends it nicely.

Minichi shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kannemeyer as he jumps to the side.
Kannemeyer attempts a counter takedown but Minichi avoids it well and moves away.
Kannemeyer swats away the attempt to clinch by Minichi.
Kannemeyer is looking to counter the offense by Minichi and move into the clinch.
Kannemeyer circles away from the clinch attempt.
Kannemeyer throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Kannemeyer leaves Minichi with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kannemeyer throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Minichi's waist but Minichi gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kannemeyer off to one side.
Koni Minichi seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Roy Kannemeyer overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Minichi connects with a couple of short punches.

Koni Minichi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Kannemeyer has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Minichi uses from the top position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Minichi is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Kannemeyer forces his way into half guard.
Kannemeyer wants to lay and pray for a moment but Minichi keeps working.

Kannemeyer is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
