The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick by Washington misses
and Mayer counters with a straight right hand.
Mayer fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Washington, pushing him back against the cage.
Washington is trying to pull guard but Mayer turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Washington wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Mayer blocks an elbow strike from Washington.
Mayer goes for a takedown in the clinch but Washington prevents it.
The referee is keeping an eye on Washington - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mayer tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Washington smiles and moves away.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mayer accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Washington is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Mayer decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Mayer cracks Washington with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Mayer moves into range and clinches up with Washington.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Mayer as Washington tries to tie him up.

Mayer wants to take the fight to the mat but Washington manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Larry Mayer. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mayer has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Washington clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
You can see the frustration on Washington's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Mayer is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Washington knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Washington for a finish.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Larry Mayer overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Washington is sitting in close to Mayer's body. Mayer has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Washington is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Washington is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Mayer.
