PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Valentin Gilliam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dante Fluentez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Valentin Gilliam has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Valentin Gilliam seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Valentin Gilliam!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dante Fluentez !
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gilliam shoots for a double leg takedown but Fluentez sprawls well. He's pushed Gilliam's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Fluentez unleashes a big counter combination but Gilliam bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Gilliam dives in and grabs Fluentez 's left leg, looking for a takedown. Fluentez pushes down on Gilliam's head and hops out.
Fluentez feints the counter takedown.
Gilliam shoots in but Fluentez avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Fluentez steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Gilliam.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Valentin Gilliam. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gilliam tries to score a power double leg takedown but Fluentez sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gilliam somewhat.
Fluentez lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gilliam shoots in but Fluentez avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Fluentez wants to counter the offense by Gilliam and move into the clinch position.

Fluentez is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Fluentez is working for a kimura but Gilliam is defending it quite comfortably.

Fluentez keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Fluentez wants to stand up but Gilliam is controlling the position.
Fluentez is keen to just control but Gilliam is a slippery customer.
Gilliam wants to get back to full guard.
Gilliam keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Fluentez is taking a breather. Gilliam says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Fluentez steps in looking to counter with the mid kick but it doesn't connect.

Gilliam looks for a takedown but Fluentez sprawls well.
Fluentez wants to counter the offense by Gilliam and move into the clinch position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dante Fluentez dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Fluentez tries to counter with a clinch but Gilliam shakes him off and moves away.
Gilliam changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Fluentez tries to avoid it but Gilliam manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Fluentez to the ground. Fluentez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Gilliam shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Fluentez pinned against the cage. Fluentez gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Gilliam throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Fluentez 's waist but Fluentez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gilliam off to one side.
Fluentez tries a quick counter leg kick but Gilliam is wise to it.

Fluentez throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Gilliam tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Fluentez is in Gilliam's guard.
Fluentez lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Fluentez stands up over Gilliam, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Fluentez throws a big right hand that misses.
Fluentez looking to sit in guard and control but Gilliam gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Fluentez pulls Gilliam in close to prevent any damage.
Fluentez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gilliam is one step ahead there.

Fluentez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gilliam defends it easily.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Fluentez can do anything to dispel that myth.
Fluentez controls Gilliam momentarily but Gilliam frees himself.
Gilliam trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Gilliam wants to stand but Fluentez has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Fluentez keeping moving, preventing Gilliam from controlling successfully.
Gilliam really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Fluentez looking for a sweep. Not yet Fluentez , not yet.
Fluentez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Valentin Gilliam seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gilliam shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Fluentez pinned against the cage. Fluentez gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

and Fluentez counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Gilliam shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Fluentez closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Gilliam's guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Fluentez is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Dante Fluentez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!



Fluentez feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Gilliam wants to sweep but no luck.
Fluentez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well, if Fluentez is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Fluentez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gilliam keeps working.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Fluentez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Fluentez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Gilliam gets back to half guard.

Fluentez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Gilliam is just riding it out for now. Fluentez eventually gives up the hold.

Gilliam is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

And that's the end of the fight!
Dante Fluentez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Fluentez has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
