PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Dorian Rush (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Demian Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dorian Rush!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Demian Maia!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Emerson Jorge and Seu Braga.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rush has Maia up against the cage in a clinch.

Maia turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Maia manages to end up in side control.
Maia is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Rush will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Let's hope that Maia has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Maia decides to stand up, so the ref orders Rush to his feet.
Rush fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rush throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Maia moves out of range as Rush throws a body kick.
Maia changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Rush tries to sprawl but Maia drives through with a takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Maia stops Rush from getting back to his feet.
Rush really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Maia throwing shots but Rush is blocking nicely.
Rush punching from the bottom.
Rush wants to get back to his feet.
Rush throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
Rush tries to roll over but Maia keeps him under control.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Maia is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Maia closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Rush's guard.

Rush is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Maia lands an elbow inside that Rush shrugs off.


It looks like Dorian Rush has been cut.

Maia turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Rush tries to bench press Maia off him but Maia keeps the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rush throwing some weak shots from the bottom that do no damage.
You can see the frustration on Rush's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Rush is not content to let Maia control the position.
Rush wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Maia is trying to ground and pound but Rush uses the momentary lack of control by Maia to regain half guard.
Maia stops Rush from getting back to his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Maia trying to control the action but Rush is working from the bottom.
Rush looks like he's trying to stand up.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Rush has one foot on Maia's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Maia.
Rush tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Rush tries to escape but Maia is in control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Dorian Rush will probably get the nod.

Maia closes the distance and clinches.
Rush has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Maia prevents the takedown attempt.

Maia ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Maia no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Maia is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Maia pushes Rush off and scrambles back to his feet.

Maia closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Rush to the mat! Rush manages to get full guard.

Rush has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Maia has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Maia jumps into guard, dragging Rush to the mat.
Rush postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Maia is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Rush tries to stand but Maia is controlling from the bottom.
Rush working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Rush scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Rush won't allow Maia to sweep him here.
Rush postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rush accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Rush controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Rush lands a jab to the nose.
Rush stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

Maia instigates a clinch.
Rush tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Maia smiles and moves away.

Maia tightens his grip and picks Rush up, before dumping him to the ground. Rush manages to land in guard.
Rush wants to get back to his feet but Maia is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Rush will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Maia wants to pass the guard but Rush is keeping the position.
Maia throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Rush works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Rush has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Maia wants to control from the top but Rush keeps moving.
Rush seems keen to control Maia's posture.
Rush wants to get back to his feet but Maia is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Maia decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Maia is breathing heavily.
Rush tries to kick Maia off but Maia keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Maia trying to control the action but Rush is working from the bottom.
Rush looks like he's trying to stand up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rush trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Rush throws a right and a left that both miss.
Rush throws a body kick that misses.

Maia drives through and clinches with Rush against the cage.
Maia just leaning against Rush, taking a breather.
Rush drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Maia turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Rush wants to get back to his feet but Maia is dominant here and he's now got Rush's back!
Demian Maia has got the better of the ground game so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rush wants to get back to his feet.
Maia controlling well, preventing Rush from escaping the position.

Rush looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
I would not like to be Rush right now.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Maia thows a huge left but connects with the canvas and not his opponent.
Rush wants to control his opponent's hands but Maia gets his hands free.
Rush has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from Maia.
Rush trying to control the position but Maia manages to sink in the hooks.
Rush is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Rush tries to roll but Maia sticks to his back.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Maia trying to control momentarily.
What can Rush do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

Maia trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Maia misses with a punch to the head.
Maia is trying to control but Rush is trying to escape here - he's now mounted.
Rush tries to reverse the position but Maia maintains control.
Rush tries to hold on but Maia postures up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Maia working some short elbows here. He postures up to throw some more ground and pound but Rush slips a leg through to get back to half guard. Nice work.

Rush kicks Maia off and gets back to his feet.
No joy there for Rush, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Rush has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.
Rush fails with an attempt to clinch.
Maia slips a jab and a cross from Rush.
Maia lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Rush circles away quickly and effectively.
Maia uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Rush has time to react.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Maia shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Rush is trying to defend but Maia finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Rush pushes Maia off but Maia dives into side control.

And that's the end of the fight!
Dorian Rush showed his dominance in that final round.
I have no idea who won that fight. Let's wait and see whether the judges are as confused as me! Time for a split decision perhaps?!. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
