PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Balboa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bernie Patat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bernie Patat!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Balboa misses with a head kick.
Patat throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Balboa keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
It looked like Balboa wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Balboa tried to score with a low kick but Patat checks it.
Patat now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Patat waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Balboa.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Balboa.
Patat misses with a low kick.
Balboa throws a low kick but it's checked well by Patat.
Patat tries a quick counter leg kick but Balboa is wise to it.

Patat sizes up Balboa with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Patat goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Balboa tries to close the distance and clinch up but Patat swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Balboa pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Balboa darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Patat has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Balboa is working away from the top position though.

Patat is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Balboa is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Patat wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Balboa.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Balboa has hold of Patat's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Patat manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Balboa wants to finish this one by submission but Patat is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Balboa.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Balboa shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Patat sprawls well. Patat wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Balboa gets slowly back to his feet.
Balboa takes a jab right on the kisser.
Patat swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Balboa.
Balboa takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Patat throws a low kick but Balboa moves out of range easily.
Balboa misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Balboa drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Patat is trying to control the position but Balboa postures up.
Balboa tries to free his leg and advance position but Patat is retaining full guard.

Balboa wants to control from the top but Patat keeps moving.
Balboa is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Patat can do to turn this around?

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Balboa thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Balboa stands up and waves to Patat to follow him.
Patat cracks Balboa with a good jab.
Balboa shoots in for a takedown but Patat shows good takedown defense.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Patat connects with a looping right hand.
Patat misses with a kick to the body.
Bernie Patat seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Balboa shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Patat defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Balboa. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Balboa dives in for a single leg takedown but Patat sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Patat follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Patat connects with a crisp jab.

Patat ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Balboa checks a leg kick.

Patat fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Balboa checks it well.
Balboa moves forwards but Patat connects with a nice, crisp jab.

Balboa shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Patat's guard.

Patat pulls Balboa in close to prevent any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Patat thuds his right hand into Balboa's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Balboa moves forwards but Patat connects with a nice, crisp jab.

Patat finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bernie Patat showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

It looked like Balboa was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Patat connects with a right hand. Balboa shakes it off.

Balboa shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Patat pinned against the cage. Patat gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Patat uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Balboa has time to react.

Patat is holding on to half guard well.
Balboa thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Balboa wants to take a breather but Patat is having none of it.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Patat throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Patat lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Balboa has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Balboa and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
The fighters circle momentarily. Patat darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Patat tests Balboa's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Balboa is looking to clinch.
Bernie Patat is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Patat misses with a low kick as Balboa jumps back.
Balboa gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Balboa changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Patat tries to avoid it but Balboa manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Patat to the ground. Patat escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Patat connects with a good right hand that stumbles Balboa. Balboa circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Patat throws a leg kick but Balboa moved away.

Balboa closes the distance and pushes Patat back into the cage.
Patat softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.
Patat lands a hook that snaps the head of Balboa backwards.
A frustrated look appears on Patat's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Patat misses with some punches.
Patat throws a punch but it's blocked by Balboa.
Balboa looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

Patat has a couple of punches blocked by Balboa.

And that's the end of the fight!
Bernie Patat comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Patat has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
