The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carlsen misses with a takedown attempt - Hodge Iii sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Hodge Iii lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Hodge Iii closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Carlsen quickly recovers to half guard.

Hodge Iii is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Carlsen is refusing to be controlled, as Hodge Iii sits in half guard.

Carlsen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hodge Iii can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Carlsen throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Hodge Iii escapes and throws Carlsen's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Carlsen is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Carlsen manages to get to full guard.

Hodge Iii got a little sloppy there for a moment and Carlsen has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hodge Iii has managed to get both his arms back between Carlsen's legs - danger averted.

Carlsen had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hodge Iii defends it easily.

Carlsen is looking for a triangle but Hodge Iii pushes his legs off easily.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
