PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Harry Slater (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Scott Page (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Harry Slater!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Scott Page!
The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Aafke Stam and Wagner Zegers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Slater throws a left and a right that both miss
letting Page counter with a right hand.


It looks like Harry Slater has been cut.
Slater shoots for a double leg takedown but Page sprawls well. He's pushed Slater's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Scott Page seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Slater throws a predictable looking body shot
and Page counters with a left to the body.
Page scores with a jab to the body.

Slater darts in and clinches Page up against the cage.
Slater is looking to take this one to the mat.

Page breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Slater lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Slater checks a leg kick.
Slater drops down looking for a counter takedown but Page sprawls and moves away.
Page keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Harry Slater. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Page scores with a takedown into Slater's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Slater utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Page throwing strikes from guard but Slater blocks nicely.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Slater pulls Page in close to his closed guard and prevents Page from doing any damage or advancing position.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Page controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Page connects with a right hand. Slater shakes it off.
Slater throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Page's waist but Page gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Slater off to one side.
Slater misses with a few strikes there.
Slater lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Page circles away quickly and effectively.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Page has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Slater on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Page closes the distance and clinches up with Slater, looking for a takedown. Page pushes Slater against the cage but Slater circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Page uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Slater.

Page shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Slater wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Page stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Slater swivels though and keeps the full guard.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
A shot to the liver by Slater. Beautiful body shot.
Slater shoots in for a double leg but Page sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Page swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Page.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Page fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Slater manages to avoid it.

Page looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Slater!

Slater is looking for a sweep.

Page is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Slater is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Page tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Scott Page dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Harry Slater's cut.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Page throws out a powerful jab.
Slater fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Slater takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Slater changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Page looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
You can see the frustration on Page's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Page wants to improve his position, back to half guard but Slater has ideas of his own. He's got hold of Page's far side arm and it looks like he's got an Americana. Ohh! Ohhhh! OOOOOOOOOH! A human being's arm is not meant to bend like that! Page is tapping like a morse code operator on the Titanic! SOS SOS! He's out of here! Great win for Slater!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Harry Slater!
Harry Slater retains his welterweight title!
Harry Slater decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
