PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Charles Hoffman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Julian Beaston (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Beaston has chosen "Getting closer" by Nitzer Ebb as his entrance music. Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Charles Hoffman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Julian Beaston!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Beaston walks into a straight right hand from Hoffman.
Hoffman shoots in but no luck this time.
Beaston stuffs the takedown.
Hoffman shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Charles Hoffman. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Beaston clinches up with Hoffman and pushes him back against the cage.
Beaston lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Beaston lands a nice uppercut.
Beaston lands a left hand that snaps the head of Hoffman backwards.

Beaston breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hoffman misses with a two punch combination.
Hoffman works over Beaston's head and body with a nice combination.

Beaston fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hoffman, pushing him back against the cage.

Beaston gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Hoffman looking for submissions off his back.
Hoffman is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hoffman won't allow Beaston to pass to mount.

Beaston looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Beaston wants to pass to mount but Hoffman is defending the position.

Hoffman trying to control but Beaston postures up.
Beaston is tying to control. Hoffman wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Hoffman looking for submissions off his back.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Beaston takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Beaston showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Hoffman.
Beaston doesn't manage to clinch there - Hoffman circles away.
Hoffman lands a jab-cross combination.

Beaston avoids a punch combination nicely.
No luck for Hoffman with that takedown attempt.

Beaston gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Still in the clinch, Beaston scores with a nice short uppercut.
Hoffman is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Beaston gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Beaston stops a takedown attempt from Hoffman.
Hoffman is breathing heavily.
Hoffman tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Beaston smiles and moves away.

Beaston closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Beaston lands a nice short elbow.
Beaston is trying to control the action in half guard but Hoffman is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Hoffman won't allow Beaston to pass to mount.
Hoffman wants to improve his position but Beaston is controlling well.
Well, if Beaston is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Beaston wants to control but Hoffman is keeping him busy.

Hoffman is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Beaston pulls his head out easily.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Hoffman circles away from the clinch attempt.
Hoffman connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Beaston momentarily.
Beaston is looking to clinch but Hoffman is avoiding it.

and Beaston decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hoffman's guard.
Beaston trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Hoffman has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Beaston can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Beaston trying to control the position from guard on top but Hoffman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Hoffman trying to keep a closed guard but Beaston is proving a slippery customer.

Hoffman looking for a guillotine here but Beaston defends easily.
Beaston sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Hoffman's guard.
Beaston passes the guard and advances to mount!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Beaston sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Beaston scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Hoffman?
Hoffman tries to hold on but Beaston postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hoffman looks to clinch

and Beaston counters by moving into the clinch.
Hoffman drops down looking for an ankle pick but Beaston pulls his leg out and moves away.
Hoffman swats away the attempt to clinch by Beaston.
Hoffman just misses with a punch to the body.
Hoffman gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Beaston moves into the clinch.

Hoffman is fighting off a takedown attempt but Beaston is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Hoffman to the mat. Hoffman regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Hoffman wants to stand but Beaston is controlling the position.
Beaston throwing strikes from guard but Hoffman blocks nicely.
Beaston landing some decent shots from guard.

Hoffman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Hoffman escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Beaston gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Beaston lands a couple of digs.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Beaston passes Hoffman's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Beaston looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Hoffman is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Beaston working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Hoffman's thigh. Hoffman counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Beaston loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Hoffman is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Hoffman is looking for a triangle but Beaston pushes his legs off easily.

Beaston is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Hoffman is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Hoffman has escaped and now he's on top!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hoffman trying to control the position from guard on top but Beaston is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Beaston has a closed guard, preventing Hoffman from standing up.
Hoffman advances to half guard.
Beaston trying to control but Hoffman postures up.
Hoffman is looking to advance position but Beaston won't allow it.
Beaston tries to roll over but Hoffman keeps him under control.

Hoffman seems to be looking for submissions.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hoffman tries to pass the half guard into mount. Beaston knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Beaston makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Beaston.
Beaston is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Hoffman doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Beaston counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Charles Hoffman. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Beaston seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hoffman does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Beaston is controlling the pace.

Beaston moves nicely into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Julian Beaston showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. And we move into the final round!



Beaston feints and as Hoffman raises his hands in defense, Beaston changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Hoffman is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Beaston is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Beaston loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Beaston accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Beaston wants to control from the top but Hoffman keeps moving.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Beaston stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hoffman swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Hoffman had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Beaston is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Hoffman Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Beaston's back instead.
Hoffman doesn't have the hooks in and Beaston manages to turn into his guard.

Hoffman is looking to sinch up a triangle. Beaston throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Hoffman's body to avoid the submission. Hoffman has instead reached around Beaston's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Hoffman arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:42 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Charles Hoffman!
