PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jakub Norka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Katzer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jakub Norka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jim Katzer!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Norka avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Katzer slips a jab and a cross from Norka.
Katzer is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Norka dives in and grabs Katzer's left leg, looking for a takedown. Katzer pushes down on Norka's head and hops out.
Norka tries for a takedown but Katzer sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Norka looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Katzer wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Katzer uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Norka.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Norka creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

Jakub Norka seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Norka gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Katzer counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

Katzer shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Norka wants to get back to full guard.

Katzer wants to pass the guard but Norka is keeping the position.

Katzer got a little sloppy there for a moment and Norka has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Katzer has managed to get both his arms back between Norka's legs - danger averted.
Katzer slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Norka has his foot on Katzer's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Katzer works his way back into a safe position though.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Norka parries the strikes from Katzer easily there. Katzer is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Norka to escape.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Katzer can do anything to dispel that myth.

Norka wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Katzer, who protects the arm well.

Norka is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Katzer knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

That was a close round but I would say that Jakub Norka will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Katzer shoots in and bounces Norka off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Norka is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Katzer presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Katzer tries to circle away but Norka has him pinned against the cage.

Norka gets control of Katzer's arms and successfully pulls guard. Norka will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Katzer really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Norka. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Norka has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Katzer is on him like a limpet, forcing Norka back against the cage.

Katzer tries to work over Norka's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Norka tries to land knees in the clinch but Katzer avoids the damage to the body.
Katzer wants to break free but Norka has control.

Jakub Norka overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Katzer is working an open guard so Norka takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Katzer keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Norka shoots in for a takedown but Katzer shows good takedown defense.

Norka ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Norka no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Norka shoots in looking for a takedown. Katzer tries to sprawl out of it but Norka keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Katzer manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Norka throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Norka takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

Katzer feints and as Norka raises his hands in defense, Katzer changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Katzer accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

and Katzer counters with a big head kick but Norka shrugs it off.
Norka shoots for a takedown but Katzer saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Norka sets himself, and Katzer steps forward looking for the clinch! Norka avoids it this time.

Katzer feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Norka has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Katzer off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Katzer shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Katzer showed some decent athleticism there.

A slapping body kick lands there for Katzer.
Norka shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Katzer as he avoids it easily.

Katzer shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Norka is trying to defend but Katzer finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Norka kicks Katzer off and gets back to his feet.

Norka gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Katzer to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Norka has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Katzer has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Norka misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Norka, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
