PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Vyacheslav Kowalchuk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Kirby (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kowalchuk comes to the cage accompanied by Kalinka Mix. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 11 - 0, fighting out of London, Vyacheslav Kowalchuk !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Jake Kirby!
The judges for this bout are James Glass, James Atkins and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kirby connects with a leg kick. Kowalchuk looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
The fight stays on the outside here - Kowalchuk looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Kirby scores with a head kick. Kowalchuk tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
We've been told by Kowalchuk 's head coaches at Canadian Top Team that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Kirby was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.
Kowalchuk tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Kirby manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Kowalchuk moves in looking to clinch but Kirby pushes him off.

Kowalchuk is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Kirby to keep the fight standing.

and Kirby counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Kirby feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Kowalchuk 's calf.
The fight stays on the outside here - Kowalchuk looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Kowalchuk tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Kirby manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Kirby avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

and Kirby counters with a nice low kick that buckles Kowalchuk 's knee momentarily.
Kirby swats away the attempt to clinch by Kowalchuk .
Kirby does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Kirby.

Kowalchuk is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.

Vyacheslav Kowalchuk seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Kirby counters with a head kick. That will keep Kowalchuk thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

That's time! Kowalchuk 's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Kowalchuk is looking to clinch but Kirby is avoiding it.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Kirby. Kowalchuk shrugs it off though.

Kowalchuk gets control of Kirby's arms and successfully pulls guard. Kowalchuk will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Kowalchuk escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kirby gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kowalchuk on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Kirby lands with a thumping leg kick.

Kowalchuk takes the fight into the clinch.
Kirby tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Kowalchuk avoids it.

Kowalchuk jumps guard and drags Kirby to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Kirby has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Kirby wants to stand but Kowalchuk has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Kowalchuk working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kirby doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kirby manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Kirby really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kowalchuk . If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Kirby got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kowalchuk has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Kirby has managed to get both his arms back between Kowalchuk 's legs - danger averted.

Kowalchuk has his foot on Kirby's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kirby works his way back into a safe position though.

Kirby has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Kowalchuk to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Kirby is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Kowalchuk pulls down on the head and he's put Kirby to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Vyacheslav Kowalchuk !
A relieved looking Vyacheslav Kowalchuk thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
