PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Trent Punchy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn has chosen Everything in its right place as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Trent Punchy!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, James Penn!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Colin Fray and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn throws a head kick that half lands.
Punchy takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Penn misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Penn bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Penn wants to control but Punchy is keeping him busy.
Punchy takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Punchy knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Punchy stops Penn from passing to mount.

Penn wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Punchy, who protects the arm well.
Punchy is trying to improve his position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
An elbow from Penn crashes against the mat.

Penn goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Punchy rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Penn's guard! Nice work there by Punchy!
Punchy postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Punchy working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
Penn trying to control the position.
Punchy landing with the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Punchy working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Penn has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Punchy throws an elbow that misses. Penn uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Punchy's guard. Nice move by Penn!

Penn stands and throws Punchy's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Penn controls the position from side control.

Penn wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Punchy, who protects the arm well.

Penn is trying to get an arm triangle but Punchy is defending well.
Punchy is trying to improve his position.

Penn tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Penn has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Penn looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Penn laying and praying for a moment but Punchy takes advantage and regains half guard.
Penn is just content to waste time from the top position. Punchy takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Punchy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penn throws a big right hand that misses.
Penn trying to control but Punchy is working from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Penn seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Penn with a flurry of punches that miss.
Penn wants to control from the top but Punchy keeps moving.
Penn wants to pass the guard but Punchy is keeping the position.
Punchy is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Penn wants to control from the top but Punchy keeps moving.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Punchy stuffs the takedown attempt from Penn. Penn gets slowly back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Penn dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Penn keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Punchy.
Penn throws a nice looking combination but Punchy bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Penn lands with a cross.
Penn has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Sloppy strikes from Punchy. Those never looked like landing.
A jab from Punchy misses.
Penn lands a head kick!
Punchy misses with a head kick.
James Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penn gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Trent Punchy is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Punchy on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Punchy looks to throw the jab but Penn is out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn connects with a nice looking jab.

Penn drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Penn postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Punchy is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Penn, into his guard.

Punchy in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Penn has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Punchy can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Punchy is working Penn over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Punchy makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Punchy stands up over Penn, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Punchy wants to pass the guard but Penn is keeping the position.

Punchy scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Punchy postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Punchy scoring with punches to the head and body.
Penn looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Punchy throws a big right hand that misses.
Penn utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Penn is looking for a triangle but Punchy pushes his legs off easily.
Penn not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Penn looking for a sweep. Not yet Penn, not yet.
Punchy trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Punchy's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Punchy is looking to work some ground and pound but Penn has wrist control.
Punchy keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Penn's head.
Punchy works over Penn with some ground and pound from guard.


Penn is rocked!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Punchy loads up on a big left hand. Penn felt that one! He's just covering up now, not defending himself intelligently - Punchy looks towards the ref and unloads with 3 more big shots and the ref has no choice but to stop the fight! Penn can't hide his disappointment, as Punchy celebrates the victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:21 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Trent Punchy!

Trent Punchy decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
