PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gunner Hilton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jimi Powell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Powell has chosen 8 Mile as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jimi Powell!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hilton misses with a hook
and Hilton takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Powell throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Hilton sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Hilton loads up on a big right hand but Powell slips the punch.

Hilton gets caught napping as Powell dives in and scores a takedown. Hilton manages to retain guard.
Powell makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Powell sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Powell cracks Hilton with a solid left hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Powell content to stall in guard here.
Powell wants to control from the top but Hilton keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Powell might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Hilton haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Powell controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Powell trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Powell has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Powell keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Hilton's head.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Powell working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Powell is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Powell working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Powell accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Hilton slips under a jab.
It looked like Hilton wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Hilton swats away the attempt to clinch by Powell.

Hilton lands a left and a right that send Powell crashing to the mat, dazed. Hilton thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

Powell is rocked!

It looks like Jimi Powell has been cut.
A shot to the body from Powell misses
and Hilton counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Powell thinking.
Hilton ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Powell moves away.
Powell misses with a straight left.
Powell lands with a cross.
Hilton drops Powell with a straight right hand, right on the button! Hilton follows him down to the mat and pounds him out with hammerfists until the referee jumps in to end the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Gunner Hilton!
