PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Eddy Fernandez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Colm Hennessey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hennessey has chosen Coalminers Beat - Land of Green as his entrance music. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Eddy Fernandez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Colm Hennessey!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Konstantin Menshow and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fernandez gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Hennessey to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Fernandez avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Hennessey must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Fernandez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hennessey doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hennessey manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Hennessey wants to control from the top but Fernandez keeps moving.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Fernandez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hennessey can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Fernandez has his foot on Hennessey's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hennessey works his way back into a safe position though.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Fernandez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hennessey is one step ahead there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hennessey trying to control the position from guard on top but Fernandez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hennessey's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Hennessey passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Fernandez is looking for a sweep.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Hennessey working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Fernandez is working hard here to advance position.

Hennessey moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Fernandez sneaks back into half guard.

Hennessey is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Colm Hennessey will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Hennessey bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Hennessey stands up and beckons Fernandez to his feet.

Fernandez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Fernandez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Fernandez stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Hennessey wants to clinch.

Hennessey fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Fernandez to the ground. Hennessey is now in Fernandez's guard.

Fernandez pushes Hennessey off and gets back to his feet.
Hennessey showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Fernandez.
Fernandez tries to score a power double leg takedown but Hennessey sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Fernandez somewhat.
And Hennessey tries to counter it with a takedown but Fernandez pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Fernandez lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Fernandez scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Hennessey is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Fernandez engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Eddy Fernandez overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Fernandez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Fernandez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Fernandez seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Hennessey for as long as he can get away with.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Hennessey drives through with a takedown into Fernandez's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Fernandez wants to sweep but no luck.
Hennessey tries to free his leg and advance position but Fernandez is retaining full guard.

Fernandez is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hennessey is aware though and is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Eddy Fernandez will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Fernandez swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Hennessey fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Fernandez sprawls well initially but Hennessey persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Fernandez manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Hennessey keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Hennessey has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Hennessey wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Fernandez manages to break the clinch.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Fernandez enables Hennessey to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Fernandez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Fernandez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Fernandez manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Hennessey ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Hennessey no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Hennessey really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Fernandez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Fernandez stays in close to Hennessey's body and controls the position.

Hennessey is trying to hold Fernandez in close to prevent damage but Fernandez has managed to pass into half guard.

Fernandez's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hennessey wants to get back to full guard.
Hennessey wants to control but Fernandez is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Fernandez in particular looking to stall.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Fernandez is thwarting Hennessey's attempts to control the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hennessey tries to clinch there but Fernandez circles away.

Hennessey decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Fernandez makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Fernandez.
Hennessey takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Hennessey tries to stand and escape but Fernandez actually recovers to full guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Fernandez is on top in guard.


And that's the end of the fight!
Eddy Fernandez showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Fernandez has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
