PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Harry Callahan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Newton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Newton has chosen Destiny's Child - Bootylicious as his entrance music. Harry Callahan has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Harry Callahan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Carlos Newton!
The judges for this bout are Michael Johnstone, Sandra Marshall and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newton throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Callahan's waist but Callahan gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Newton off to one side.
Callahan tries to counter by clinching up but Newton breaks away and moves out of range.

Newton shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Newton showed some decent athleticism there.

Newton is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Callahan defends it well.

Callahan is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Newton pulls his head out easily.
Newton is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Newton is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Newton is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Callahan sees it coming and defends easily.

Newton is working for a submission of some sort.
Newton working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Newton takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Newton has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Callahan wants to get back to his feet.
Callahan is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Newton looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Callahan is looking for a sweep. Newton is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Newton looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Newton lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Callahan wants to improve his position but Newton is controlling well.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Newton in particular looking to stall.

Callahan is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Newton pulls his head out easily.

Newton is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Callahan doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Newton.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Newton lands a nice short elbow.
Callahan wants to get back to full guard.

Callahan has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Newton can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Newton drops back looking for a leg! Callahan is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Callahan manages to kick Newton off! Newton jumps back into Callahan's guard.
Callahan knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Newton on the ground.

Callahan has his foot on Newton's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Newton works his way back into a safe position though.
Newton looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Newton is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Newton seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Callahan is looking for a sweep. Newton is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Newton has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
