PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between David Woodward (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phallos Eugene (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, David Woodward!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Phallos Eugene!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Tarja Halkonen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Eugene throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Woodward tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Eugene is in Woodward's guard.

Eugene wanted to stand there but Woodward had control of the position.

Woodward lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Eugene had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Woodward defends it easily.
Woodward postures up in Eugene's guard and throws a big left but Eugene blocks it.

Eugene throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Eugene pushes Woodward off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Eugene moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.


It looks like David Woodward has been cut.
Eugene throws a series of punches but Woodward avoids them all with ease.

and Woodward holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Woodward is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Eugene escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Woodward showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Eugene.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Woodward shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Eugene as he jumps to the side.
Eugene fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Eugene feints a jab promting Woodward to slip. Eugene then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Woodward slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Eugene drives through with a takedown into guard.
Woodward has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Woodward not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Eugene gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Woodward fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Eugene shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Eugene performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Eugene's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Eugene seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Woodward does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Woodward might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Woodward wants to control but Eugene is keeping busy and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Eugene throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Eugene darts in looking for a takedown but Woodward gets double underhooks and turns Eugene into the cage.
Woodward appears to be looking for a big counter.
Eugene looks to throw a body kick

so Woodward counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Eugene pushes Woodward off and scrambles back to his feet.
Woodward is trying hard to land a takedown here. Eugene sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Eugene dives in for a single leg takedown but Woodward sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Woodward shoots in for a double leg but Eugene sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Phallos Eugene seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Woodward tries to clinch but Eugene moves out of range.

Woodward is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Eugene.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Woodward.

Eugene will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Woodward is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Woodward is on top in guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Woodward throws a strike but Eugene rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Eugene passes Woodward's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Eugene takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Eugene decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Phallos Eugene seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Eugene looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Woodward is fending him off so far but Eugene persists. Nope, Woodward circles away and we're back to standing.
Woodward could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Woodward wants to clinch up but Eugene keeps it at a distance.
Eugene changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Woodward tries to avoid it but Eugene manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Woodward to the ground. Woodward escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Woodward is looking to counter the offense by Eugene and move into the clinch.

Eugene closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Woodward manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Eugene keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Woodward is trying to pull guard but Eugene has him pressed against the cage.

Eugene breaks the clinch.
Woodward slips a jab and a cross from Eugene.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Nice takedown defense from Woodward. No joy for Eugene on that attempt.
Woodward lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Eugene throws a series of strikes that have Woodward backpedaling.

Eugene throws a right hand that Woodward ducks under and follows up with a left that Woodward also avoids with ease.

Eugene takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Eugene has a couple of punches blocked by Woodward.

Eugene prevents Woodward from getting back to his feet.
Woodward pulls Eugene in close to his closed guard and prevents Eugene from doing any damage or advancing position.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Woodward wants to sweep here but Eugene controlling him for the moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

and Eugene counters with a stiff right hand.
Eugene cracks a nice hook into Woodward's ribs.

David Woodward has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Phallos Eugene.

Eugene's jab looks to have found its range, popping Woodward under the eye.

Eugene throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Eugene gets a clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Woodward misses with a knee strike.
Woodward has had enough of the clinch but Eugene keeps him there for the moment.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Woodward's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Eugene breaks the clinch.
David Woodward has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Phallos Eugene is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Woodward displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Eugene.

Phallos Eugene comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
