PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Thor Odinson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marco Ruas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thor Odinson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marco Ruas!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Leandro Rodrigues and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Odinson shoots in and bounces Ruas off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ruas has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Odinson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Ruas working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Odinson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Odinson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Odinson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ruas on the ground.

Odinson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Odinson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Odinson closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Ruas has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Odinson is working away from the top position though.
Odinson wants to stand up but Ruas is controlling the position.
Ruas regains full guard. Nicely done.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Odinson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Odinson would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Ruas had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Odinson is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Ruas Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Odinson's back instead.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Odinson fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Odinson tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Ruas slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Ruas wants to control but Odinson is keeping busy.

Odinson is taking a breather. Ruas says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Odinson slips a nice elbow through Ruas's hands, connecting with Ruas's forehead.
Odinson seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ruas does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Odinson bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Ruas tries to strike from the bottom but misses.

Odinson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Odinson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

You can see the frustration on Ruas's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Odinson is looking to clinch but Ruas is avoiding it.
Odinson will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

and Odinson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Ruas's guard.

Ruas is looking for a triangle but Odinson pushes his legs off easily.

Ruas escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Odinson gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
