PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Solomon Lawal (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Rekis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Lawal comes to the cage accompanied by Beds Are Burning. Rekis has chosen AC/DC - Thunderstruck as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Solomon Lawal!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Rekis!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Cecil Peabody and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick by Lawal misses

and Rekis counters with a single leg into guard. Lawal didn't expect that.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Rekis tries to free his leg and advance position but Lawal is retaining full guard.
Rekis stops Lawal from standing up.
Rekis is in close to Lawal's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Rekis throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Lawal works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rekis postures up in Lawal's guard and throws a big left but Lawal blocks it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lawal wants to stand and escape but Rekis is having none of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Rekis has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Rekis is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Lawal with a body shot.
Rekis shoots for a takedown but Lawal saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Rekis gets control of Lawal's arms and successfully pulls guard. Rekis will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Lawal wants to stand and escape but instead Rekis has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Rekis thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Rekis postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Rekis stays in close to Lawal's body and controls the position.
Rekis trying to control but Lawal is working from the bottom.
Rekis loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Rekis drops back looking for a leg! Lawal is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Lawal manages to kick Rekis off! Rekis jumps back into Lawal's guard.

Rekis's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Rekis throws a big elbow that misses.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Rekis closes this distance looking for a takedown but Lawal circles away.
Lawal dives in and grabs Rekis's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rekis pushes down on Lawal's head and hops out.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Rekis takes an elbow to the temple.
Lawal creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Rekis's defenses.
Lawal digs a right hand underneath Rekis's ribcage. Rekis let out a lung full of air as it connected.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Solomon Lawal will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Rekis has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Lawal is trying to keep an underhook but Rekis manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Rekis is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Rekis has hold of Lawal's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Lawal tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Rekis cranks the arm and Lawal screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Lawal, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). John Rekis!
A very excited looking John Rekis made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
