PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Charlie Tyson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Freddie Mercury (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Freddie Mercury was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Charlie Tyson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Freddie Mercury!
The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Dmitry Maklakov and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tyson misses with a series of wild punches.

Tyson tries to sprawl but Mercury drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Tyson tries to get to full guard but Mercury has control of the leg.
Tyson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Mercury is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Tyson is just riding it out for now. Mercury eventually gives up the hold.
Tyson is trying to maintain the position but Mercury is very close to passing his half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Tyson is trying to stand.
Mercury wants to pass the guard but Tyson is defending well.

Mercury wants to free his trapped foot but Tyson is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Well, if Mercury is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Tyson could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Tyson wants to get back to his feet.
Tyson wants to improve his position but Mercury is controlling well.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Mercury in particular looking to stall.
Tyson pushes Mercury off looking to stand but Mercury dives back in and keeps control.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Mercury misses with a head kick.
Tyson looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.

Tyson takes the fight into the clinch.

Mercury has Tyson pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Mercury pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Tyson tumbling to the mat - Mercury dives into Tyson's guard.

Mercury tries to free his leg and advance position but Tyson is retaining full guard.

Mercury gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Tyson enables Mercury to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Tyson manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Tyson wants to sweep but no luck.

Mercury gets to his feet - Tyson follows without any prompting.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Mercury fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Tyson, pushing him back against the cage.
Mercury wants to get back to striking at distance but Tyson won't allow it.
Mercury throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Tysons head.
Tyson tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Mercury just stands there and leans against the cage.
Tyson is trying to pull guard but Mercury has him pressed against the cage.

Mercury manages to pull guard.
Mercury looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Tyson trying to control the position from guard on top but Mercury is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Mercury looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Mercury not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mercury wants to stand and escape but Tyson is having none of it.

Mercury isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Tyson stacks Mercury on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Tyson!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mercury looks winded!
Mercury is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Tyson is looking to take a break and control but Mercury is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Freddie Mercury dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Mercury lands a really nice looking cross but Tyson seems unphased.

Mercury changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Tyson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Tyson wants to get back to his feet but Mercury drags him back down.

Mercury tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Mercury has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Tyson tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.

Mercury has hold of Tyson's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Tyson manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Mercury prevents Tyson from getting the reversal.

Mercury avoids the attempt from Tyson to control.
Mercury sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Tyson sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Freddie Mercury has got the better of the ground game so far.

Mercury is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Mercury thows a huge punch but Tyson dodges it nicely.
Tyson wants to get back to his feet.
Tyson is looking to control Mercury's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Tyson avoid being mounted?

Mercury has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Mercury throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Tyson is trying to get back to his feet but can't.
Tyson is trying desperately to improve position.
Tyson tries to hold on but Mercury postures up.

Mercury looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Tyson is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Mercury tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Tyson sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

Mercury content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Tyson wants to improve his position but Mercury is controlling well.
Tyson is looking to escape.
Tyson throws a strike from the bottom but Mercury passes into side control!

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Tyson manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Mercury is looking for a kimura but Tyson is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mercury to get the leverage.

Mercury stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Tyson gets tackled into the cage by Mercury. Mercury maintains the clinch.

Mercury thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Mercury stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Mercury gets the takedown into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

A lull in the action here as Mercury stalls from top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Freddie Mercury showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. And we move into the final round!



Mercury closes the distance and clinches.
Tyson is trying to break free.
Tyson tries to pull guard but Mercury forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Tyson jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mercury walks away with a smile on his face. Tyson gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Mercury has managed to clinch.

Tyson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Tyson.

Tyson is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Mercury works over Tyson with some ground and pound from guard.
Mercury stands up over Tyson, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Tyson is looking to stand up but Mercury isn't so interested in that idea.

Tyson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mercury is looking to work some ground and pound but Tyson has wrist control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Mercury controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Tyson manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Mercury slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Tyson had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mercury defends it easily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Tyson wants to clinch.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Tyson rushes Mercury and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
Freddie Mercury comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Mercury has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
